"Elise! Elise..."
Madeline’s voice acted like a massive hand, violently dragging Elise out from the depths of another nightmare.
When Elise opened her eyes, her vision was a complete blur.
"Elise, can you hear me? Elise?" Madeline’s hand patted her cheeks gently in a flurry of worry.
Elise clutched her chest, gasping frantically for air. Her heart was beating like a wild, trapped beast—thump, thump, thump—each heavy beat laced with an agonizing, piercing ache.
She could recognize that face from the end of her dream even if it were burned to ashes.
How could that be? How was that even possible...
If he actually went to the warehouse that day, why did she still end up suffering through all of that horrific trauma?
Seeing Elise’s vacant, dazed stare, Madeline panicked even further. "Elise, don’t scare me like this! Look at me!"
Elise’s eyelashes fluttered slightly. Moments later, she finally snapped out of the shock induced by the nightmare. Her eyes slowly moved, and her vision gradually regained its focus, landing on Madeline’s panicked face.
"Madeline..."
Madeline let out a massive sigh of relief, collapsing onto the floor right beside the bed. "You scared the absolute daylights out of me..."
Frowning, Elise looked at Madeline with a face full of confusion. "What happened to me?"
"I walked in and saw you clutching your chest with your mouth open, gasping for breath! Your eyes were closed, but tears were streaming down your face like crazy! I was terrified—no matter how much I called you, you didn’t respond at all. It wasn’t until I patted your face and pinched your philtrum that you finally woke up!"
"I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you." Elise wiped her eyes, only then realizing her face was drenched in cold tears.
"I had another nightmare," she said in a barely audible whisper. "Madeline... I dreamed that on that day five years ago, Dylan actually went to the warehouse..."
Madeline froze on the spot.
She pushed herself up off the floor, sat on the edge of the bed, and stared straight into Elise’s eyes. "Elise... tell me honestly, can you still not let go of Dylan?"
Elise shook her head slowly.
What she couldn’t let go of was the missing truth behind that kidnapping; what she couldn’t let go of was the answer she had repeatedly sought over the past five excruciating years.
"Then why on earth did you dream about him?"
"Some things can’t be explained in just a few words." Elise looked at Madeline, gently patting her hand to reassure her. "I’m okay now. Head downstairs first. I’ll freshen up, change my clothes, and join you shortly."
"Alright then." Seeing that Elise wasn’t ready to open up, Madeline didn’t push her.
After Madeline walked out, Elise lay back on the bed for a few more minutes before propping herself up, swinging the blanket aside, and stepping onto the floor.
After dinner, Elise found it impossible to fall asleep again.
The kids had taken a long afternoon nap, so they were full of energy tonight, running around and playing even past nine-thirty without a trace of fatigue.
Elise sat alone on the bedroom balcony, staring out into the quiet night. Involuntarily, the final scene from her nightmare kept replaying in her mind.
She knew with absolute certainty that it wasn’t just a simple dream. It was one of the buried memories that Jessica had artificially wiped away.
What she couldn’t comprehend was why he wanted those memories erased in the first place.
Over the past five years, she had harbored endless bitterness toward Dylan, believing he had refused to save her and their unborn children. When she later discovered that he was keeping a mistress and child at Orchard Residence, her resentment and hatred had boiled over. She had interrogated him time and time again, hurling every harsh, painful word she could think of at him—yet Dylan had always met her outbursts with heavy, resolute silence.
She truly couldn’t understand him.
If he actually showed up that day, why did she and her babies still suffer such a tragic, horrifying fate? Why would Dylan rather play the part of a heartless scumbag who abandoned his pregnant wife and children than tell her the single grain of truth?
What on earth happened after Dylan arrived at that warehouse five years ago? And why did he insist on forcing her to forget it all?
Countless questions swirled endlessly in her head, making every passing second feel like a painful eternity. Ever since she brought up the divorce, this was the very first time she felt such a desperate, burning urge to see Dylan face-to-face. She wanted to ask him directly: what really happened during that kidnapping?!
The sharp buzz of her phone vibrating on the table cut through her spiraling thoughts.
She snapped back to reality and saw an unfamiliar number flashing on the screen. After a moment’s hesitation, she swiped to answer.
"Hello?"
"It’s me."
Leah’s usual cold, overbearing voice rang through the receiver.
