Chapter 150
Carter Estate.
Ment
Ethan Carter leaned against the floor–to–ceiling window in the second–floor study, his figure as upright as a pine tree. The sleeves of his black silk shirt were casually rolled up to his forearms, revealing the distinct bones of his wrists.
The cigarette between his fingers burned down to the filter, the crimson ember stinging his fingertips slightly before he slowly snapped back to reality. His slender fingers pinched the butt and precisely stubbed it out in the crystal ashtray beneath the windowsill.
A soft “ting” sounded as the ashes trickled down.
The ashtray was already half–full of cigarette butts, piled up in varying lengths. The pungent smell of nicotine mingled with the unique camphor fragrance of the old estate, intertwining and swirling in the enclosed study, congealing into a heavy cloud of gloom.
He gazed out at the stone path in the courtyard, blanketed with ginkgo leaves. The golden leaves formed a thick layer, which would rustle underfoot. But at this moment, the vast estate was so quiet that he could hear his own breath, even the wind seemed to carry a hint of stagnation.
After an unknown amount of time, the study door was gently pushed ajar. David Wilson tiptoed in, his steps extremely light, as if afraid to disturb the man by the window.
His voice, laden with a weight that mirrored the stone in his chest, barely reached Ethan from across the room.“Ethan, Adrian was taken into custody by the police during the board meeting.”
Ethan didn’t so much as twitch, his fingers tracing the icy carvings along the window frame. He remained indifferent, as if hearing about something utterly insignificant.
David continued his report:“He’s been charged with three major felonies: embezzlement, leaking trade secrets, and commercial
bribery.”
“The evidence submitted includes complete bank statements and crucial audio recordings. The chain of evidence is airtight. The Economic Crime Unit has officially opened a case.”
He paused, a note of concern creeping into his voice.“This is huge. The public is still in the dark, but every major family in Chicago knows what’s happening.”
“Carter Group’s stock is already fluctuating, and the board is in complete chaos.”
“Oh?”
Finally, Ethan reacted, his gaze shifting from the ginkgo leaves. A faint, sardonic smile touched his lips. “Did those old geezers on the board dig this up?”
Ethan’s eyes flickered with derision as he glanced toward the courtyard’s stone path, now buried beneath a carpet of ginkgo leaves. He had always known that Adrian’s ambition was far greater than his ability, and it was only a matter of time before he stirred up trouble at Carter Group.
Adrian overestimated himself, always thinking that he, the former president ousted by Carter Group, was not to be feared.
Since the old man’s passing, he’d become even more brazen, misappropriating company funds to cover his investment losses, leaking the company’s core secrets to competitors, and even using commercial bribes to win over board members, all in a vain attempt to secure the chairman’s position.

He had originally planned to expose these things after Adrian had taken the chairman’s seat, and then step in to clean up the mess when the board was at its wit’s end.
To show those old geezers on the board who was truly capable of holding up Carter Group.
“It wasn’t…”
David carefully observed Ethan’s expression. “It was Ryan Walker who called the police. He’s the one who uncovered all of Adrian’s misdeeds.”
Hearing this, Ethan frowned, a flash of annoyance crossing his eyes.
Ryan Walker again!
How could he have known about the things Adrian had done?
Those traces of misappropriation hidden within the gaps of Carter Group’s financial statements – back when he was working at Carter Group, he had used many of his trusted contacts and spent half a year just to find a clue.
But how could Ryan Walker, a seemingly uninvolved outsider, gather such conclusive evidence in such a short amount of time–including bank statements, witness testimonies, and even a recording that directly condemned Adrian?
“Ryan Walker…”
Ethan murmured the name, his lips pressed into a cold, hard line, the pressure around him plummeting to freezing.
Wasn’t this half–brother of his supposed to have been serving in the military all these years, only recently discharged?
Where did he get the connections and relationships to uncover all this?
Who the hell was he?
And what was his purpose in coming to Chicago?
“Investigate.”
Ethan narrowed his eyes.“I want to see a complete record of Ryan Walker’s life over the past few years within three days!”
“Also, sir.”
David acknowledged the order and prepared to leave, but seemed to remember something. He hesitated, then braced himself and spoke. “Mrs. Bennett was also at Carter Group at the time, and she went with Ryan Walker.”
“Clara?”
Ethan turned sharply, his obsidian eyes snapping into focus.
“What was she doing at Carter Group?”
And with Ryan Walker, no less.
Could it be that Ryan Walker resented the Bennett family’s years of neglect and was deliberately getting close to Clara Bennett to muddy the waters of the Bennett family?
Ha, Clara Bennett, this is the guy you had to divorce me for?
“Apparently, the old man left some shares to Mrs. Bennett.”

David quickly replied, “But since the share transfer hasn’t been finalized, she didn’t participate in the vote and has been waiting for Ryan to finish the meeting in the lounge.”
“Shares?”
Ethan frowned, deep lines forming between his brows.
The old man left shares to Clara?
How could he not know about this?
“When did this happen? Is there a will?”
David glanced at Ethan, thinking for a moment, “There should be.”
“This started circulating within the company, and Mrs. Bennett probably only found out recently as well.”
“Then why didn’t you say something sooner!”
Ethan shot an irritated glare at David.
David swallowed hard, “I never saw the old man’s will, and I didn’t know about this. I thought it was just Adrian spreading rumors.”
“It wasn’t until I heard Ms. Bennett went to the Carter Group and wasn’t turned away that I realized…”
The old man really did leave Clara shares.
“Go ahead and get back to work.”
Ethan knew he couldn’t blame David; even he had been kept in the dark about the shares his grandfather left to Clara.
David’s initial assessment that it was a false rumor planted by Adrian was also understandable.
But his grandfather had always been meticulous. If he genuinely intended to grant Clara shares, he wouldn’t have left it without a trace. Unless… the will had been deliberately hidden!
With that thought, Ethan left the study, stood at the top of the stairs, and summoned the butler.
“Did my grandfather’s lawyer ever deliver a will?”
The butler stood in the hall, looking up. Seeing the impatience on Ethan’s face, his heart tightened.
Of course, the will had been delivered, but the lawyer had also stated that it couldn’t be shown to Ethan until after he and Clara were
divorced.
So, he had handed it over to Margaret to keep safe.
“Speak!”
Seeing the panic on his face, Ethan snapped, “What is it? Now that I’ve been ousted from Carter Group, is everyone going to start keeping things from me?”
“Mr. Carter.”
The butler jumped, quickly explaining, “I didn’t mean to hide anything from you, but your grandfather left instructions that the will wasn’t to be disclosed before you and Mrs. Bennett divorced.”
Hearing this, Ethan frowned, a surge of displeasure rising within him.

“What do you mean it can’t be released before Clara and I divorce?”
“So, if I never divorce Clara, this will can never be revealed?”
However, seeing the butler’s expression, he knew that the will must have been delivered to the Old Estate.
If he didn’t have it, then it could only be with Margaret.
With that thought, Ethan didn’t linger, turning and heading up the stairs.
He went straight to Margaret’s room.

The room remained exactly as it had been when his grandfather was alive. The pearl jewelry box on the vanity, the Porcelain vase in the corner, even the gardenia incense in the air, were all exactly the same as before.
Without hesitation, Ethan went to the vanity and bent down to open the bottom drawer.
He had someone install it for Margaret, making it the most secret place. Margaret kept all her important documents here.
Seeing that the drawer was locked, he reached into the box where the cosmetics were placed and fumbled around for a moment, pulling out a key from the bottom.
He inserted it into the lock and turned it gently. With a click, the drawer opened.
Inside were several files neatly stacked. He reached in and pushed aside the files on top, and sure enough, he found a stiff, leather document bag.
He opened the file, and a will stamped with the notary office’s seal appeared before his eyes, along with the old man’s personal seal and a
disc.
