“Oh, honey!” she said, her eyes widening when she caught sight of me. “I’m so happy you stopped

by!”

I grinned and rushed to hug her. One night with my parents hadn’t been nearly enough time.

She set me up at the kitchen counter with a glass of ice cold milk and two chocolate chip muffins on a bright yellow plate.

We chatted for a while, and of course, the conversation somehow became about Alexander.

“Your_father can’t wait to plant those roses that Alexander gave him,” she said as she loaded the dishwasher

I finished off one of my muffins and started on the other. “I’m sure they will be beautiful.”

“Yes…” my mom’s back stiffened, and I could tell that she had more to say. She turned toward me with a nervous expression. “You know, honey, you can tell me if there’s something going on between you two. It doesn’t matter to me that he’s your boss.” She picked up a dish towel to wipe her hands. “I just want you to be happy…and you seemed pretty happy around him.”

I froze. I had no idea how to respond to that. Part of me wanted to blurt out that we were dating, but everything seemed so complicated right now. I wasn’t ready to tell my parents about my relationship just yet.

“We aren’t together,” I lied. “Alexander’s parents want him to be with someone more…cultured than me.”

My mother’s blue eyes sparked with outrage. “It’s his loss! And hers!” She bent down and kissed the top of my head. “You would make an amazing daughter–in–law. You’re the best daughter a woman could ask for.”

My heart warmed at her comment. “Thanks, Mom.”

“Now, Aidyn, on the other hand, would be a good choice for you,” my mom said as she began to wipe down the counters. “And you wouldn’t have to worry about if his mom approves of you. Skylar already loves you, of course.

I leaned my head back and groaned. “Mom”

She chuckled. “Alright, I can take a hint. I’ll stop interfering in your love life.”

My shoulder slumped. “Thank you.”

“Besides, you don’t need to find someone new when your divorce is still fresh,” she said.

“Exactly.”

I shifted uneasily since I had already found someone.

“But I can only give you advice and hope that you follow some of it,” my mom said, throwing the dishtowel over her shoulder, and leaned against the counter. “I know that you’re an adult and all grown up. You’re going to make your own decisions and make your own mistakes. It’s all a part of life and growing up.”

I wiped my hands on my napkin. “Just because I’m grown up doesn’t mean that you stop being my parent. You will always be my mom.”

Tears sprang into her eyes, and she leaned down to give me a big hug. “Thank you for saying that, Olivia.” Her voice was slightly trembling. “It really means a lot to me.”

I clutched my mother closer, wishing that I could stay in this moment forever. Sitting in my childhood home and hugging my mom, I felt like I was a kid again. Part of me wished I was. I missed when everything wasn’t so complicated.

My mother and I spent the morning baking.

Being her assistant in the kitchen reminded me of my childhood and helped get my mind off of everything that was going on. She directed me as I measured sugar, mixed batter, and helped her pipe frosting onto warm cupcakes.

When the clock struck noon, the kitchen was filled with delicious desserts. As I helped clean, my muscles were pleasantly sore from the work. She made us grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch, and I swung my legs happily at the counter as I washed it down with her handmade peach iced tea. My mom chatted about small town gossip. It was interesting to hear about what the people I had grown up with were doing now.

As I helped her put the desserts in Tupperware, I realized that this was one of the most relaxing mornings I’d ever had. The tense feeling in my shoulders had completely loosened. Spending time in my childhood home baking with my mother was even better than getting a deep tissue massage.

“I need to visit more,” I said as my mother packed up desserts for me to take home.
