Chapter 355
Then, he shut my door and walked away.
If I was being honest, I was glad to be rid of him. Could he not take the hint that I wasn’t interested? Aidyn was a good guy, but I hope he wasn’t one of those creeps who couldn’t take rejection.
I was lost in thought on the drive to work. But when I was close to the office, I noticed a familiar car driving behind me. At a stoplight, I took a closer look at the driver, and my stomach swooped when I realized who it was.
Alexander.
Why would he be following…
I stopped mid thought as I realized why he might be following me. I hadn’t paid attention to the other cars in the parking garage earlier because I’d been too focused on avoiding Aidyn’s advances. Could Alexander have seen me talking to my old friend? Was that why he was following me?
My palms began to sweat, and I nervously kept glancing at my rearview mirror, trying to gauge his mood.
But then I thought that maybe Alexander was following me to protect me from his crazy ex, Jess. Could Alexander’s mother enlisted Jess’s help to attempt to sabotage our relationship? I wouldn’t put it past that crazy woman. She would do anything to ensure that her precious son married someone from a ‘respectable family.”
My anger increased with each second that passed.
It felt like no matter what, outside forces made Alexander and I’s relationship temporary
Maybe I should just enjoy it while it lasts.
But even that thought made my heart ache like someone had just stabbed me in the back with a
serrated blade.

Alexander parked right beside me.

When we exited our cars, I tried to study his reaction to attempt to get some sort of clue as to how he was feeling. But his expression remained neutral. As we walked to the elevator in silence, I couldn’t figure out whether that was a good or bad thing. I wondered if he was somehow suppressing his rage and that he was going to blow up soon. Was he simmering like a volcano right now underneath his cool facade?
If that were the case, I didn’t want to be around when he finally erupted.
Our footsteps echoed in the large space, and the silence was beginning to get on my nerves. It felt disingenuous to act like nothing more than strangers when we had shared a bed two nights ago. The longer the silence stretched on, the more it seemed impossible to break it.
Finally, when the elevator door slid open on our office floor, Alexander turned to me.
“Today, you and Gai will change jobs, and you will act as my lead personal assistant,” he said in a formal tone. “I want to make sure that you can handle all of the responsibilities that come with the job.”
I nodded, and my heart rose slightly with excitement.
“Thank you for the opportunity,” I said. “I won’t let you down.”
Alexander stared at me a second longer, then turned and walked to his office.
But I didn’t let his weird mood bring me down. My goal was to work my way up in Alexander’s company, and this was a good stepping stone. I was going to try my best today.
When I ran into Gai in the break room, I had to do a double take. Her white blouse was wrinkled, her bright eyes were slightly bloodshot, and her usually sleek blonde hair was limp.
She noticed my large grin and the fact that I had been humming when I walked into the room, which I had abruptly stopped when I saw the frown on her face.
“Why are you in such a good mood?” Gai asked as she yawned widely and poured herself a large cup of coffee. “We have to work on the weekend. This sucks.”
Ah, now her sour mood and appearance made sense. Gai was hungover from last night. She must have spent her Saturday night partying. Alexander must have called her into work at the last minute.
I shrugged and began to make Alexander his coffee. “Just trying to stay positive,” I said.
As soon as Alexander’s coffee was ready, I escaped from the room, not wanting her bad mood to bring me down. In Alexander’s office, I went over the schedule for the day with him.
