Chapter 360
Alexander digests his mother’s words, and for a long time, the two sit in silence surrounded by the perfume of the flowers that Helen planted with care. Alexander could tell that his mother had her own agenda with this conversation, but he just couldn’t tell what it was. He needed to know her real opinion about this, but he had a feeling that she wasn’t going to tell him the truth.
“What is your honest opinion about Olivia and me?” Alexander asked and picked up a snickerdoodle cookie. But he didn’t eat it. He merely held it in his hands. “Don’t hold anything back, Mother. I’m really asking you what you really think about this whole situation.”
Helen smiled and patted her son’s hand. “Honey, even if I didn’t agree with you pursuing Olivia, would you actually listen to me?”
A reluctant smile pulled on the corners of his mouth. “No, probably not,” he admitted.
At that moment, triumph rang through Helen. She knew that she was smart to act this way. She felt no remorse for trying to manipulate her son. He didn’t know what was best for him. She did.
“Come on, Mom. I really do want to hear your opinion even if I don’t like it or listen to it,” Alexander said after a moment.
Helen sighed. “Honey, there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m trying to accept that, and you need to give me some time to do so. I didn’t know how deep your feelings were for Olivia before today. I thought that all the rumors between you two were untrue. You’ve given me so much to think about that it’s going to take some time for me to process everything.”
Alexander’s eyes sharpened. He had caught his mother in a lie. “If you just found out about Olivia and I today, why did you call Jess back to the city a few days ago?” he demanded.
This had been the real reason that he had come here. He wanted to confront my his mother about Jess.
Helen’s pulse quickened, but she forced herself to stay calm. “I didn’t call Jess back,” she said in an even tone. “Jess called me a few days ago and told me that she was moving back to the city. I tried to dissuade her against it because I remembered how much trouble she caused you, but Jess is a grown woman who makes her own choices. She seemed determined to come back. I’ve been trying to warn you ever since I found out.”
Alexander stared at his mother, trying to figure out if she was lying.

Helen’s mouth dropped open. “Did you really think that I would bring Jess back to the city just to cause a rift between you and Olivia?”
Alexander raised one of his eyebrows. “Can you blame me?”

Helen drew herself up so that her back was standing straight. She rearranged her features in offense. She wasn’t the best actress but she hoped that her son would buy the act.
“I can’t believe that you would accuse me of something like that!” Helen said and put her hand to her chest, laying it on thick. “Jess wanted to come back on her own volition. I had nothing to do with it.” She sniffed and tightly crossed her legs. “Besides, she told me that she is already in a new relationship. She has moved on from you, and she regrets how she treated you in the past. Jess told me that she had gone to therapy, and her therapist helped her realize that she made some mistakes when you two were dating.”
Alexander rolled his eyes. “Jess did a lot more than make some mistakes. She quit her job so she could stalk me twenty–four seven. I had to change my phone number three times because she kept getting new phones after I blocked her old ones. The final straw was when she made a scene in front of a whole restaurant when she found me on a date with another woman. Jess is certifiably insane, Mother. She might say that she’s in a new relationship and wants a fresh start, but it’s all part of her act. Don’t let her fool you.”
Helen shrugged. “She sounded very convincing over the phone,” she said. “Jess kept going on and on about her new boyfriend.”
