Chapter 362

It’s the only shot we have.Helen shrugged. Alexander will only accept the breakup if Olivia initiates it.

Neil didn’t like this plan very much, but he ultimately agreed to it. He didn’t want to fight with his wife and would rather leave his son to his own devices, but he knew from experience that Helen wouldn’t let any of this go until she got her way.

I’m only agreeing to this if you promise not to hurt our son in the process,” Neil warned his wife.

Helen jerked back like she had slapped him. What kind of mother do you think I am? Of course, I’m not going to hurt him. Olivia isn’t right for him. A mother knows these things.

Neil shook his head, not convinced in the slightest by his wife’s claims.

Alexander drove back to his apartment, his head so crammed with thoughts that he was starting to develop a headache. On the way, he got a call from his tech guy who had been looking into a matter for him.

Sir, I found evidence that Jess had sent a message to Olivia’s phone last night,” the tech guy revealed.

Alexander’s hands gripped the steering wheel as he thanked the tech guy for his hard work and hung up.

He shook his head, his trust in his mother plummeting. Despite her innocent act, Alexander knew that his mother had something to do with Jess coming back to the city.

And he was going to prove it.

*Olivia*

I stumbled into my apartment after the taxi dropped me off.

My checks heated as memories floated into my muddled brain. Even as I tried to recall everything that happened after I slammed those shots of sake, everything began to slip away. It was like trying to catch smoke with my bare hands.

I sort of remembered Alexander and I kissing in his car, but I couldn’t remember what we said

before or after. All I knew was that I had probably embarrassed myself. I chugged a glass of water and tried to stop my head from spinning. Then, I took a cold shower, which helped clear some of the fog in my head.

Wrapped in my favorite fluffy pink robe, I collapsed onto my bed, thankful that I had just changed the sheets. For nearly an hour, I attempted to fall asleep, but I couldn’t stop my racing thoughts. When I sat up, my stomach didn’t protest, so I looked in the fridge and my cabinets but I didn’t have anything to cat.

I called Ava, and she agreed to come pick up to go to the diner near my apartment. I dressed in my most comfortable pair of black sweatpants and an old Tshirt displaying a band I never listened to anymore. Ava looked pretty in a pink tracksuit, her short hair pinned back with a large pink headband.

We shared a big plate of pancakes smothered in syrup and butter. I ordered a large cup of black coffee to help sober me up. Suddenly ravenous, I ate greasy hash browns, scrambled eggs, crunchy sourdough toast, and crispy bacon. When I was finished, my head was clear, and my stomach was pleasantly full.

As the sun went down, Ava and I walked around downtown, mostly window shopping. We even passed by the sex store Rose had dragged me to. When Ava asked why I was blushing, I just shook my head and pulled her in the direction of the next store.

By the time Ava dropped me back off at my apartment, it was almost ten at night. My arms were sore from carrying my shopping. I might have gone slightly overboard, but there was nothing wrong with a little retail therapy.

After I said goodbye to Ava, I planned to store my shopping bags in my room and then pack an overnight bag. I was going to drive to my parentshouse to stay for a few nights. Being in the same apartment complex as Alexander was becoming too complicated. I needed to distance myself from him. Living and working near him was suffocating me. I never had a chance to think about our relationship because he was always around.

But my stomach jolted when I neared the door to the lobby. There was a man standing under the large maple tree, his face hidden in shadow. I blindly searched in my bag to find the pepper spray, but I made sure to keep my eyes on the man.
