The gala was winding down, and I was getting anxious. I scanned the ballroom for Selena’s face among the departing guests. She promised to meet me in the main hall after luring Cedar into our trap. Where was she
Just as I prepared to search for her, the large digital screens around the ballroom illuminated. The departing guests paused, assuming some post–dinner entertainment was about to begin. The screens displayed what appeared to be a retrospective of Nathaniel’s life–the same slideshow we’d shown before dinner. Nothing that would hold anyone’s interest.
I smirked. Selena must have everything prepared. It was unfortunate that Ridley wasn’t present to witness this, but it hardly mattered. This would certainly make headlines, and I couldn’t wait to see his reaction when he discovered how Cedar would be featuring in tomorrow’s news
cycle.
‘Ladies and gentlemen, please don’t rush off,” I called out with practiced warmth. “My daughter has prepared a special video tribute to her grandfather. Please, take a moment to enjoy it.”
After my gracious invitation, the guests politely settled back into their seats, though many looked bored as mundane family photographs
flickered across the screen.
Two minutes in, however, the video abruptly changed.
The backdrop of a hotel room appeared–rumpled bedsheets, a king–sized bed, and two intertwined figures. The audio system suddenly filled
the room with unmistakable intimate sounds that couldn’t possibly be misinterpreted.
Every head in the ballroom snapped to attention.
“My God, is this some kind of technical error?”
“Someone needs to shut this off immediately!”
“Wait–doesn’t that woman look familiar?”
I carefully arranged my features into a mask of horror while inwardly savoring the moment. “Oh my goodness,” I gasped, covering my mouth.
“Isn’t that Cedar? What is she doing? Who is that man with her?”
Once I planted the suggestion, recognition rippled through the crowd.
“You’re right! That’s the Wright’s adopted daughter–she was here earlier, but disappeared.”
“That’s definitely the Elegance Hotel’s signature headboard. This couldn’t be happening right now, could it?”
“How shameless to do something like this during her grandfather’s celebration!”
The room erupted into scandalized whispers that barely masked the compromising soundtrack still playing. I struggled to contain my delight as
the murmurs grew louder.
“Wasn’t she involved with Mr. Sterling?”
