Interesting how the mother was delighted when she thought it was her adopted daughter, but now that it’s her biological daughter, she’s hysterical, someone remarked loudly.
Wasn’t she the one who had become a laughing stock at the gala last month? This Wright girl seems to have quite the pattern of public indiscretions.”
“Speaks volumes about the family values at Wright Creatives…”
“Shut up! All of you shut up!‘ I shrieked, my voice barely recognizable ever to myself.
Mercifully, the staff finally cut the power, silencing the mortifying sounds. But the damage was done.
Jonathan’s POV
The celebration for my father’s retirement had been going exceptionally well. Thanks to Ridley’s presence, I had secured two major contracts that would keep Wright Creatives from the brink of bankruptcy. With these deals providing a foundation, the company would finally stabilize
after months of financial free fall.
As guests began to rise from their seats, the digital screens suddenly displayed explicit footage. My first instinct was that Elara had orchestrated this–she’d been acting suspiciously all evening. When I saw her smirking while pretending to be shocked, my suspicions were
confirmed.
I confronted her immediately, grabbing her wrist. She was still under the delusion that this couldn’t harm our business. The woman had absolutely no understanding of how reputation functioned in our industry. Using Cedar in this scheme was not only despicable but potentially ruinous for the deals I’d just secured.
Then the atmosphere shifted. I followed Elara’s suddenly horrified gaze to the screen and felt my blood freeze. It wasn’t Cedar in the video.
It was Selena.
My mind went blank with shock as our carefully cultivated image disintegrated before Chicago’s elite. The room buzzed with whispers and judgment, each comment like a needle piercing our reputation.
“Mr. Wright, we’ll be taking our leave now,” William approached, his expression glacial. “Regarding the Lake Shore project we discussed earlier- I believe it’s no longer a good fit. You should explore other opportunities.
I felt desperation rising. “William, we had practically finalized the details
“I’ve changed my mind,” he said flatly, glancing toward the now–darkened screen before walking out.
The other potential partners followed suit, making hasty excuses as they departed. Within minutes, the ballroom stood nearly empty, with only the ruins of our reputation remaining.
“You” I turned to Elara, fury overwhelming my usual restraint. My palm connected with her cheek before I could think better of it.
She fell to the floor, momentarily stunned, before scrambling back up. “You dare hit me? Our daughter has been set up, humiliated in front of everyone, and instead of finding who’s responsible or helping her, you’re assaulting your own wife? Who do you think you are?”

She lunged at me, fingernails ready to draw blood, and we grappled shamefully in the middle of the emptying ballroom.

I had never felt such rage. After weeks of Wright Creatives teetering on collapse, I had finally seen a path forward. Now, in a single evening. Elara’s reckless scheme had destroyed everything.
Whether the woman in the video had been Cedar or Selena made no difference–either way, the damage to Wright Creatives was catastrophic. How could she have conceived such a self–destructive plan?
My father’s voice cut through our struggle, tight with barely controlled anger. “Enough! What is wrong with you two?”
His face was ashen, his entire retirement celebration reduced to a humiliating spectacle. And here we were, the company’s leadership, brawling like children instead of managing the crisis.
