Chapter 152
“What do you want?!”
“You robbed me of my chance to ever be a mother,” she hissed. “The
accident you caused left me barren. So I think it’s only fair that you
experience what it’s like to lose a child, don’t you?”
A crushing sense of hopelessness filled my chest. “I’m begging you-”
“Mommy?” Aiden’s hand tugged at my sleeve, his eyes wide with fear.
“What’s wrong? Who’s on the phone?”
Selena’s laughter crackled through the speaker. “The little bastard is with me now. If you call the police, I’ll kill us both. My life is already
over–what’s one more tragedy?”
“What do you want me to do?” I whispered, struggling to keep my
voice steady.
“Come to the abandoned warehouse off Route 41. Come alone. No
police, no bodyguards, no one. For every person you bring with you,
I’ll cut your precious boy once. If he bleeds out… well, that would be
your fault, wouldn’t it?” Her laughter grew more maniacal before the
line went dead.

I stared at my phone in horror, my mind racing. I needed to get to
Oliver immediately, but I couldn’t let Aiden know what was
happening. He was just a child, despite his extraordinary maturity.
I knelt down to Aiden’s level, gripping his shoulders firmly. “Aiden,
listen to me. I just received ‘information about Oliver that I need to
follow up on immediately.”
His eyes narrowed with suspicion. “What information? Who was that
on the phone?”
“It was… a friend from the design community who thinks she spotted him.” The lie tasted bitter in my mouth. “I need you to stay here and
coordinate the search. You have all these security personnel at your
command.”
“That doesn’t make sense,” Aiden said, his voice taking on that analytical tone that made him sound decades older than six. “Why would you go alone? Henderson and I should come with you.”
Henderson stepped forward, frowning. “Ms. Wright, Master Aiden is
right. It’s not safe for you to-”
“There’s no time!” I said, injecting desperation into my voice. “Aiden, right now you’re the only one I trust to manage this operation. If we
all leave, who will coordinate the teams here?”

I could see him wavering, torn between his desire to help find Oliver
and his instinct that something wasn’t right.
“I’ll call the moment I find anything,” I promised, already backing
toward the exit.

I turned and hurried toward the exit before he could question me
further, ignoring the confused calls of Henderson behind me. Every
step away from Aiden felt wrong, but I couldn’t risk Selena hurting
Oliver. She was unstable enough to follow through on her threats.
The taxi ride to the outskirts of Chicago was a blur of streetlights and
fear. I kept hoping my phone would ring with news that Oliver had been found safely elsewhere, that this was all some cruel joke by Selena. But the screen remained dark as we left the bright lights of
downtown behind.
“You sure about this place, miss?” the taxi driver asked as we pulled
