Ridley’s POV
I watched as Cedar writhed in obvious discomfort, my stern warnings
falling on deaf ears. She was too far gone, my words nothing but
distant buzzing to her drugged mind.
She tugged at her jacket, exposing far more skin than was decent.
Every movement was an unintentional provocation, each twist of her
body chipping away at my carefully maintained self–control.
My jaw clenched into a hard line. This woman… she had to be some
cosmic test of my restraint.
I gathered her restless form into my arms and strode out of the
warehouse. My black Audi waited at the entrance, headlights cutting
through the darkness. Cedar winced at the sudden brightness, raising
her hand to shield her eyes.
I yanked open the rear door and placed her–perhaps less gently than
I should have–onto the back seat.
“Ouch…” She let out a pained gasp as her back hit the leather
upholstery.

Chapter 156
I couldn’t help the predatory gaze that took over my features. The soft Chicago night air did nothing to cool the heat building inside me.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Sterling,” she managed, each word trailing with an unconscious sensuality she seemed oblivious to. “I’ve been drugged…
I can’t control my actions. Please don’t… don’t let it affect you.“–
Her normally clear voice was tinged with desperation and something
darker. “Could you… take me to a hospital?”
I leaned down toward her, my body casting a shadow over her flushed form. The scent of my cologne mingled with her perfume in the
confined space of the car.
Cedar’s breathing immediately grew uneven.
“Aren’t you going to explain what happened tonight?” I caught the
back of her head, my voice dropping to a dangerous rasp. The control
I prided myself on was slipping away.”
She licked her dry lips, making them glisten in the dim light. “Thank
you for saving me…”
Those lips looked like ripe cherries. I found myself wondering what
they would taste like. Sweet and soft, no doubt.

I lowered my head slowly, stopping just before our lips met.
Frustration twisted inside me.
What was I doing? This woman had somehow bewitched me. My
legendary self–discipline was crumbling in her presence.
But I had questions that demanded answers.
“Cedar, don’t play dumb with me,” I said, regaining some semblance
of control. “Tell me why my son called you ‘Mommy.“”

Confusion flickered across her dilated pupils.
“I don’t know…” She shook her head, eyes wide. “If I’d known he was
your son, I never would have let him call me that…”
“Really?” My lips curved into a mocking smile.
It all made sense now. Every time we’d encountered each other, I’d
never gotten a clear look at her son’s face. Because her son was Oliver
-my Oliver.
And she’d sworn to me that she was an unmarried mother. The lies
had rolled off her tongue so effortlessly.
Strangely, rather than anger, I felt an inexplicable pleasure blooming

in my chest. I grasped her chin between my fingers. “So having a son
was a lie, being an unmarried mother was a lie. Tell me, what else is
false?”
The heat radiating from her skin seemed to calm slightly when it met
my cool touch. She closed her eyes and nuzzled against my palm. The
contrast between her burning skin and my cool hand sent electricity
through me.
I studied her face, fighting the desire building within me, trying to
determine if she was deliberately seducing me. Her expression
