Chapter 159
Cedar’s POV
I glanced up cautiously, studying Ethan’s expression. He seemed- distracted, not particularly interested in interrogating me about my purchase. Thank God. I exhaled slowly, the tension in my shoulders finally easing.
“I forgot my wallet,” I admitted, heat rising to my cheeks. “Could you possibly lend me thirty dollars? I promise I’ll pay you back as soon as
possible.”
Ethan glanced at me, his expression unreadable, then simply walked to the counter and paid. I followed him outside the pharmacy, feeling more composed now that the transaction was complete.
“Can I get your number?” I asked, forcing a casual smile. “I’ll add you on WhatsApp and transfer the money once my bank account clears.”
He looked like he was about to dismiss the debt entirely, but at the mention of WhatsApp, he recited his number while I quickly added him to my contacts.
“Well, thank you again. I should head home now,” I said, already

stepping back.
“I’ll drive you,” he replied, his tone leaving little room for argument.
“That’s really not necessary I can just take the bus-”
“Actually, I have a few questions I’d like to ask you, Cedar,” he said, his lips curving into a slight smile. “You wouldn’t deny me that small
courtesy, would you?”
I sighed inwardly. When someone pays for you, you can hardly refuse
them a conversation. I reluctantly climbed into his sleek BMW,
wondering what questions could possibly be so important.
As we drove, I caught him studying my profile.
“Is there something on my face?” I asked, self–consciously rubbing my
cheek.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what do your parents do?” His
question seemed carefully casual.
“I… don’t have parents,” I shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant
about something that had defined my entire life. “I was adopted by the Wright family, but we’ve recently… parted ways. So I guess I’m
officially parentless and on my own now.”

His knuckles whitened on the steering wheel. “Have you ever tried to
find your biological parents?”
I reached for the delicate chain around my neck, pulling out the
pendant that normally rested hidden beneath my blouse. “This is the
only thing my birth mother left with me. It was tucked into my baby
blanket when the Wrights took me in.”

The silver pendant caught the car’s interior light, its unique design
glinting subtly. According to Jonathan, any letter that might have
accompanied it had been lost years ago. This necklace was my only
connection to whoever had given birth to me.
“I know a lot of people, Cedar. Perhaps I could ask around, see if
anyone recognizes this design,” Ethan offered quietly.
I immediately took a photo of the necklace and sent it to his phone.
“If you hear anything–anything at all–please let me know, I’d be
incredibly grateful.”
“It’s nothing,” he assured me as we pulled up in front of my apartment building. “It’s getting late. You should go inside.”
I thanked him again and stepped out of the car, watching him drive away before slowly walking toward the entrance. That’s when I spotted a familiar figure standing by the door.

Ridley leaned against the wall, white shirt crisp despite the late hour,
his entire presence somehow making my shabby apartment building
look inadequate. My muscles tensed automatically at the sight of
him.
After what had happened last night, I had no idea how to face him.
My mind went blank with panic. I swallowed hard, turned around, and
did the only thing that made sense: I ran.
“Stop right there,” his deep voice commanded.
