Chapter 330

That specific afternoon used to loop in her mind endlessly.

When she first heard this duet all those years ago, it felt like destiny. The music had woven itself into her soul, every note permanently attached to Finnian’s face.

Now, hearing it again, a sharp, suffocating ache flared in her chest. Falling in love with the wrong man required a devastating amount of courage-and surviving it required even more.

It was nearly ten-thirty when the sleek Maybach pulled up to the grand entrance of the hotel. Simon hopped out, circled the vehicle, and opened Kaia’s door.

“Let me carry her,” he offered softly.

Carrying a sleeping thirty-pound child was exhausting, and Kaia was grateful for the help. “Thank you. I appreciate it.”

She carefully transferred Brynlee into his arms. Simon looked completely natural holding a child. He adjusted Brynlee so her cheek rested securely against his shoulder, ensuring she stayed fast asleep.

Kaia then helped a groggy Celine out of the front seat. Celine rubbed her eyes. “Are we here already? I was having a great nap.”

The group walked through the extravagant hotel lobby, heading toward the elevators.

At that exact moment, in a dimly lit lounge just off the lobby, Finnian and Dexter were seated at a table, glasses of scotch in hand.

Finnian absentmindedly glanced toward the lobby, and his heart violently seized in his chest.

Through the glass partition, he saw Kaia supporting Celine, while Simon carried a sleeping Brynlee against his chest. The four of them walked past the lounge, looking like a perfect, happy family returning from a late dinner.

“Boss… is that your wife?” Dexter gasped, unable to stop himself.

Finnian’s grip on his glass tightened incrementally until his knuckles turned bone-white. The glass groaned under the pressure.

Dexter was about to say something else, but seeing the murderous, unblinking stare on his boss’s face, he instantly snapped his mouth shut.

Inside the lounge, the grand piano continued to play, and a jazz singer crooned a

melancholic tune. Finnian sat frozen in his chair, resembling a statue carved out of pure

rage.

À heavy minute passed before Dexter dared to whisper, “They just went up. Do you want go say hello?”

Get me another one,” Finnian ordered, his voice devoid of all emotion.

Dexter practically sprinted to the bar and returned with a double shot of whiskey.

Finnian threw it back in one violent swallow. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle feathered in his cheek.

Let’s go.”

He stood up and stalked out of the lounge. Dexter scrambled to keep up.

The elevator numbers chimed as they ascended, stopping at Kaia’s floor.

Finnian leaned against the elevator wall, his eyes closed, reigning in his temper. When the doors slid open, he stepped into the hallway with long, aggressive strides.

Seeing them together like that had felt like taking a blade straight to the ribs. It was an agonizing, suffocating fury.

Finnian rarely displayed explosive passion, but the sight of another man claiming his territory, holding his child, and standing beside his wife triggered a primal, violent possessiveness.

Dexter watched his boss nervously. Seeing Simon Quinn act like Brynlee’s father had clearly pushed Finnian past the breaking point.

At the end of the long corridor was an open-air sky garden. The cool night wind blew in, carrying the scent of the nearby lake.

As Finnian approached Kaia’s suite, he suddenly heard a familiar voice drifting from the garden terrace. He stopped dead in his tracks.

Dexter heard it too and immediately backed away, knowing better than to intrude.

Finnian’s gaze turned predatory. He stepped silently toward the archway.

Out on the terrace, a woven vine swing hung from a wooden frame. Kaia was sitting on it, the hem of her black dress swaying gently as she rocked back and forth.

Beyond the balcony, the sprawling expanse of Lake Geneva glittered under the moonlight, looking like a scene from a dream.

“Did you drink too much? Can’t sleep?” Simon’s voice floated through the air.

Kaia looked up at him. “Probably. I’m so used to pulling all-nighters that I can’t force myself to sleep this early.”

Simon stepped forward, handing her a steaming mug. “Drink this. It’s herbal tea. It’ll help you relax.”

“Thank you.” Kaia took the mug. The warmth seeped through the ceramic into her fingertips

Simon was undeniably considerate. He knew how to take care of people.

He took a seat in a wicker chair opposite the swing, looking out over the water.

“Kaia, there’s something I’ve always wanted to ask you,” Simon said quietly. “Why did you marry him?”

Kaia froze. It was the last question she expected him to ask.

She looked down, taking a slow sip of her tea. “I’m sorry. I really don’t want to talk about him Why don’t we talk about you instead? I’ve always been fascinated by your line of work.”

Simon let out a low, incredibly warm laugh. “Is that right? What do you want to know?”

She shrugged, slipping easily into the role of a curious friend. “Tell me about the most interesting thing that’s happened at your job.”

Simon obliged, launching into a story about a complex corporate case. Kaia listened intently her eyes focused on him.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed on the stone tiles. Both of them turned toward the sound and saw Finnian standing in the archway, his eyes locked on them.
