Noelle stepped into the soft ambient glow of the balcony lights. The night breeze caught the fabric of her elegant dress, highlighting her stunning curves. She looked ethereal, like a sirer trying to pull him under.
She walked slowly until she was standing right in front of him.
Finnian stared at her. It was an undeniably beautiful scene, yet he suddenly realized the truth: the magnetic pull he used to feel whenever she looked at him was completely gone.
‘Why are you staring at me like that?” Noelle asked, a demure smile playing on her lips as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “Do you remember when we were in middle school and you told me I was ugly? I told you the ugly duckling would turn into a swan one day, and you just laughed at me.”
‘I remember,” Finnian replied, a faint smile touching his lips.
‘So, did I become the swan you imagined?” Noelle tilted her head up, clasping her hands behind her back in a coquettish display of
vulnerability. Her bright eyes locked onto his. “Or do you still think I’m not pretty enough?”
Finnian hesitated. For some reason, this entire conversation suddenly felt ncredibly forced and uncomfortable.
He let out a dry laugh. “I only said that to mess with you back then. You’re very beautiful.”
“Really?” Noelle beamed, thrilled to hear him admit it so sincerely. Riding the high of his compliment, she pushed her luck. “Then tell me in your eyes, who is prettier and more feminine? Me or Kaia?”
Finnian’s expression froze. He quickly masked it with a neutral smile “You can’t compare the two. You have your own kind of beauty, and she has hers.”
“Why can’t you compare? I know men look at the overall picture without noticing the details like hair or makeup. Is that true?” Noelle pressed, her heart soaring. She felt confident that if he was willing to entertain this conversation, he still deeply cared for her.
“Everyone’s definition of beauty is different,” Finnian said evasively. “You look like a flawless piece of art. Kaia has a radiant, natural glow. It’s just two entirely different aesthetics.”
Noelle paused, sensing his reluctance. Taking a shaky breath, she finally asked the question that had been eating at her soul. “Finnian… did you ever regret marrying her?”
Finnian almost dropped his cigarette. He aggressively crushed it out in the nearby stone ashtray and turned his back to her. “Dinner is ready. We should head downstairs.”
Noelle stood frozen. Why was he dodging the question? Was it too painful to answer, or did he simply refuse to give her what she wanted?
‘Finnian, you didn’t answer me. What were you thinking on your wedding day?” Noelle demanded, her desperation bleeding through.
Finnian’s brow furrowed heavily. He turned back to face her. “I don’t need o answer that, Noelle. And you need to stop asking.”
‘But I want to know,” Noelle pleaded, stepping closer to search his dark eyes. Her voice dropped to a frantic whisper. “I just need to know.”
Finnian felt backed into a corner. He stared at her in deafening silence until the rejection fully registered on Noelle’s face, and her eyes filled with fresh tears.
‘Fine. If you won’t tell me, then I don’t care anymore,” she choked out, spinning on her heel and practically running off the balcony, furiously wiping at her eyes.
