Chapter 382

Watching Finnian leave without a word of explanation, Noelle

immediately turned to Dexter. “Where did Finnian go?”

“Today is September 1st,” Dexter replied. “Brynlee has school registration. Mr. Sanders probably rushed over for that.”

Noelle froze, then nodded. That explained it.

Finnian had already ordered Dexter and Mrs. Wagner to keep Noelle’s pregnancy a secret, so neither dared to breathe a word of it.

By the time Finnian reached the school, it was already 10:30 AM. He had driven straight from the hospital faster than usual. His heart raced at the thought of his promise to his daughter the night before. Would she be disappointed that he was late?

He parked at the school gates, sprinted inside, and headed straight for Brynlee’s classroom. It was already autumn, and yellow ginkgo leaves blanketed the ground. He crossed the field and rounded the corner of the academic building.

Just as he was about to head upstairs, he stopped dead in his tracks.

Underneath the sycamore tree, Kaia and Simon Quinn were sitting side by side on a bench. They were chatting, the atmosphere between them light and pleasant. The autumn sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting a warm glow over them. Kaia had her head tilted slightly as she listened to Simon, a rare, relaxed smile on her face.

Nearby on the playground, Brynlee and Anna Quinn were running around the slide, their laughter ringing out in the crisp air.

Finnian stood frozen, his large hand gripping the handrail so tightly his knuckles turned white.

The scene was suffocatingly picture-perfect.

Ever since Kaia had brought up divorce, she had never smiled at him like

that

Taking a deep breath, Finnian finally forced his feet to move toward them. The sound of his footsteps drew their attention. Kaia looked up and saw him. Simon turned his head as well, giving Finnian a polite riod of acknowledgment.

For once, Finnian didn’t return the greeting.

His eyes locked onto Kaia’s face. “Is her registration done?”

“It’s done,” Kaia replied coolly. “You’re late.”

Finnian immediately looked toward the slide. Brynlee was standing at the top. Seeing her dad approach, she crossed her little arms over her chest, pouted her lips, huffed, and turned her back to him.

Finnian knew his daughter was genuinely upset.

“Brynlee…” Finnian crouched down, keeping his voice gentle to coax her.

“Dad broke his promise. Hmph.” Brynlee threw a little tantrum, refusing to be placated.

“Dad was wrong. What can I do to make you forgive me? Buy you a present?”

“No!”

“Then what do you want Dad to do?” Finnian found the tiny girl both amusing and panic-inducing. To him, his daughter’s anger was a crisis.

Of course, Brynlee was only pretending to be mad. Eager to get back to playing with Anna, she tilted her head and demanded, “I want Dad to say he loves me three times, and then give me a kiss.”

Finnian immediately scooped her up, repeating the words three times. Brynlee threw her arms around his neck and whispered in his ear, “Just

this once. If you miss my important day again, I won’t forgive you.”

Deal. Dad remembers,” Finnian said, feeling a wave of relief as he looked at her slightly sweaty, adorable face.

After pacifying his daughter, Finnian walked back over to Kaia. “When are we heading back?”

Kaia watched the girls play. “Let her have a few more minutes. It’s rare she gets to hang out with Anna.”

Simon kept his gaze on the kids, remaining silent.

Finnian didn’t say anything either, but he deliberately sat down on the empty space beside Kaia.

Kaia glanced at him, then suddenly turned to Simon. “You said you wanted coffee earlier, right? I’ll go grab two cups. Can you keep an eye on the kids?”

“Kaia, you don’t have to,” Simon quickly protested. “The nearest cafe is a bit of a walk. Forget it.”

“It’s fine.” Kaia just wanted an excuse to leave. She had no desire to sit next to Finnian, and since Simon was watching the kids, she was happy to run the errand.

“Can you get me a cup too?” Finnian suddenly asked.
