Kaia glanced around. Her colleagues were already shooting curious looks in her direction.
Setting down her silverware, she followed Elaine out of the clinic. It wasn’t until she stepped outside that she realized she was still wearing her white lab coat, but it didn’t matter. She followed Elaine to an upscale coffee shop just down the street. Elaine pushed the door open and walked straight into a private booth.
Kaia paused for a second, her hands slipped into her pockets, before eventually following her inside.
Elaine took a seat. She was dressed in head–to–toe couture, her hair perfectly styled, but her makeup was heavier than usual. Dark shadows lingered under her eyes, betraying a lack of sleep.
When the waiter came in, she curtly ordered two coffees.
Kaia sat across from her and asked calmly, “Did you need me for something?”
Elaine turned her gaze toward the window, seemingly repulsed by the sight of Kaia’s face. A heavy silence filled the small booth.
Kaia simply lowered her gaze, waiting.
Finally, Elaine broke the silence. “Kaia, are you really divorcing Finnian?”
Kaia looked at her and nodded. “Yes.”
Elaine suppressed her rising anger. “Then tell me, why? Did the Sanders family mistreat you?”
Kaia remained quiet for a moment before answering smoothly, “No. We just aren’t compatible. There are no feelings between us.”
Elaine let out a harsh scoff. “No feelings? You survived a loveless marriage for seven years and you’re complaining about it now? Don’t you think that’s a bit ridiculous?”
Kaia’s fingers curled slightly. She had thrown her entire heart into this marriage, but seven years still wasn’t enough to earn a place in Finnian’s. Now, she was simply bowing out.
“You know exactly how we ended up married. Forcing two people together without love isn’t good for
either of us.”
Elaine glared at her sharply, her voice laced with suspicion. “Is there someone else? Or did you just milk the Sanders family for all we’re worth, and now you’ve decided my son isn’t attentive enough for you?”
Kaia’s head snapped up, meeting Elaine’s gaze head–on. “There is no one else.”
“Then why are you leaving?” Elaine’s voice pitched higher. “Kaia, you need to have a conscience. Over the years, The Sanders Conglomerate gave you a massive platform. We funded your career to get you where you are today. Not long ago, Finnian gave you shares that bumped you up to seventeenth on the wealth list. A girl from an ordinary background like yours only got this far because of us. Don’t you dare say you didn’t rely on the Sanders family. Now that you’ve got power, you want to jump ship without an ounce of loyalty? How is Finnian supposed to face his peers? What will people say about him? If he can’t even keep his wife, how is he supposed to command respect as the CEO?”

Chapter 443
Listening to her mother–in–law’s tirade, Kaia just kept her head down. She couldn’t refute some of those points.
“You said there are no feelings. What do you expect? Did you want him clinging to you every day, whispering sweet nothings, babying you? Finnian is a busy man. Where would he find the time for that nonsense? As his wife, can’t you be a little more understanding?”
Kaia looked up at her. “He never gave me any of those things, so forgive me for not ‘understanding.”
Elaine was taken aback. Kaia’s voice rang out, clear and steady.
“Has he ever cared about me? I don’t remember it happening. Yes, he did what a husband on paper should do–he provided money and fulfilled his basic obligations. But that only proves he’s a responsible man. It has absolutely nothing to do with loving me.”
Elaine sneered, acting as if Kaia was being overly dramatic. It was so typical of a small–minded woman. Men showed their love in many ways. She had all the wealth and luxury in the world, and yet she still demanded emotional devotion? She couldn’t have it all.
“You’re just ungrateful. Finnian gave you what most women can only dream of, and you think it’s not enough? Exactly how much do you want?” Elaine’s voice grew louder.
Right at that moment, the waiter arrived with their coffee and water. Elaine cut her tirade short, angrily grabbing her water glass and taking a large gulp.
Kaia reached for her coffee and took a slow sip. Since Elaine was pushing the issue, continuing to cover up Finnian’s mess would just make her look pathetic.
“I don’t want much, and he certainly doesn’t lack time,” Kaia said, her voice dropping to an icy calm. “He lacks heart. His heart isn’t with me. It belongs to someone else. I guess you didn’t know that.”
