Elaine looked absolutely horrified, glaring at Kaia. “What are you talking about? Where is his heart?”
Kaia looked down and let out a soft, mocking laugh. When she looked up, her eyes were completely cold. “His heart belongs to his precious sister–in–law.”
“Kaia, what kind of garbage are you spewing?” Elaine’s face turned completely dark, her eyes flashing with pure malice. “Are you trying to say Finnian and Noelle are having some sort of dirty affair?”
Kaia hadn’t expected Elaine to react quite so violently. She paused for a moment before replying, “Don’t you know? The way Finnian cares for Noelle looks a lot more like romance. When she gets hurt, he drops everything to rush her to the doctor. When she’s sad, he runs to comfort her. He’ll even spend the entire night at her apartment, completely ignoring his own wife and daughter. If her phone is turned off, he scours the entire city like a lunatic looking for her. Did you really not know any of this?”
Elaine’s face drained of color, turning a sickly white, but Kaia didn’t stop.
“You said the Sanders family never mistreated me. You’re right, they treated me decently. They gave me a platform to build my career, which brought me fame and wealth. But to say it was just handed to me? That’s a lie. I fought for it with my own ability. I built the Aethelstan R&D system from scratch. Even when Noelle returned from abroad and hijacked half of my life’s work, I never said a word. But what she wanted to steal wasn’t just my projects. She wanted to steal my husband.”
Elaine was visibly shaking. She shot up from her chair, her hand violently swiping the coffee cup on the table. The dark, scalding liquid splashed directly onto Kaia’s pristine white coat.
The coffee dripped down the fabric and splattered onto the floor.
The atmosphere in the booth instantly flatlined. It was a suffocating, dead silence, broken only by Elaine’s furious, ragged breathing.
“Kaia, you… shut your damn mouth!” Elaine stood there, trembling with rage. “Don’t you dare spout your nonsense here. This is your fault, don’t blame innocent people. You’re completely ungrateful, and Finnian has never done anything to wrong you.”
Kaia didn’t flinch. Her coat was completely ruined, soaked in dark stains. She looked up at Elaine, her gaze calm but laced with absolute frost. “I merely stated the facts. To you, it looks like I’m causing a scene. Honestly, I never demanded Finnian treat me like a princess. But since he’s my husband and we signed a marriage license, he should honor our vows. He should be loyal and responsible, not turn me into a walking joke for everyone to laugh at. Since he can’t do that, dissolving the marriage and giving him his freedom is the only option. Tell me, what did I do wrong?”
Elaine choked on her words. Her mind went completely blank, her chest heaving as she glared at Kaia with venomous eyes.
“Don’t you feel any shame saying that? Why did you marry my son in the first place? Was it for love? Seven years ago, you didn’t marry him for love, and now you say he doesn’t love you and want out? You’re just using my son and the Sanders family as a stepping stone. You’re a selfish, social–climbing opportunist.” Elaine was utterly hysterical now, her insults turning vicious.

Chapter 444
“Yes, I made mistakes too. That’s why getting a divorce is the most responsible thing I can do for this relationship.” Kaia’s normally composed face was slightly pale, but she forced herself to maintain her dignity.
“If you don’t want him, there is a line of women desperate to take your place.” Elaine’s voice grew shrill. “You probably have no idea how many heiresses wanted to marry him before you. Watch him. The second you divorce, my son will remarry and have a new baby in a heartbeat.”
It felt like a blunt knife hacking into Kaia’s chest, leaving a ragged, bleeding wound. She pressed her lips together tightly, grabbed a napkin, and slowly began dabbing the coffee stains on her coat. “I know. But that’s Sanders family business. It has nothing to do with me anymore.”
Elaine froze. She had expected Kaia to at least show anger, not this terrifying, deadened indifference.
Kaia looked up at her. “I called you Mom for seven years. For seven years, I fulfilled every duty expected of me. I protected his dignity and the family’s reputation. Going forward, that is no longer my job.”
She pulled three crisp bills from her purse and placed them gently on the table. “The coffee is on me.”
Without another word, she turned and walked out of the booth.
