“Are you still suspicious of my relationship with Noelle?” he demanded, his voice suddenly sharp as he watched Brynlee playing with some fallen leaves nearby. “And what’s going on with Brynlee? Why is she so calm about us getting divorced? What did you tell her?”

Kaia hadn’t expected him to interrogate her simply because their daughter was handling the situation maturely.

“Even a child knows you don’t love me. What more is there for me to say?” she scoffed.

“You don’t love me either,” Finnian shot back. Looking deeply wounded, he locked his intense gaze on her and lowered his voice, repeating, “You never loved me.”

Kaia stiffened, feeling as though an old wound had just been ripped open. She lowered her eyes, a self-deprecating smile on her lips. “Maybe. So why are you getting so worked up? Now that we’re divorced, you can openly do whatever you want and love whoever you want. Isn’t that a great thing?”

He froze, stumbling back a step as his breathing turned shallow. “If you’re convinced I betrayed you just because of my past with Noelle, then that’s your own blinding prejudice.”

Kaia stared at him, her eyes turning freezing cold. “Like I said, emotional infidelity is infinitely more disgusting than a physical affair. What are you even trying to prove at this point? Everyone saw what was going on. Don’t stand there and tell me nothing happened.”

Finnian stood frozen in place, completely paralyzed.

Watching his daughter spinning joyfully under the streetlights and recalling the absolute contempt on Kaia’s face, his chest tightened painfully. She made it sound as if he had been engaging in some passionate, reciprocal love affair with Noelle.

Brynlee wasn’t done playing, so Kaia humored her, bending down to help gather more leaves.

“Mom, look! There’s a ton over there!” Brynlee pointed, running off to scoop them up.

With a stiff expression, Finnian watched the two of them. The wind caught Kaia’s hair, and she casually tucked a stray strand behind her ear-a simple gesture that looked incredibly soft and natural.
