Chapter 512

Jenny narrowed her eyes and continued, “She was completely obsessed with him back then. Everyone in our lab knew about it, but no one dared to say a word. Kaia certainly knew how to dream big. But looking at it now, I guess if you’re shameless enough and bold enough to go after what you want, you really can succeed.”

Dexter glanced at the privacy screen beside him before asking one final, confirming question. “Can you guarantee that everything you’ve said today is the absolute truth? You’re not just making this up, are you?”

“Why would I make this up? If you don’t believe me, go ask Kaia yourself,” Jenny snapped, clearly offended. Everything she said was true.

Dexter nodded. “Well, thank you for the information. You’re free to go now.”

“What? I haven’t even eaten yet! Why are you asking me to leave? That’s so rude of you.” Jenny had no intention of leaving. She came here today to look at a handsome guy and enjoy some good food.

Dexter offered an awkward smile. “Alright, I won’t ruin your meal. I’ll be taking off first.”

“Hey, don’t leave! Stay and finish the meal with me. I’m actually pretty interested in you.” Jenny laughed as she stood up, reaching out to grab Dexter’s arm.

“Sorry, I have a girlfriend,” Dexter said, flatly rejecting her advance before turning and walking away.

Behind the adjacent screen, Finnian pulled off his sunglasses, revealing eyes that were heavily bloodshot.

He turned his head, staring at the blurry patterns on the partition, and sat there in stiff silence for a very, very long time.

His mind was completely blank.

The person Kaia had a secret crush on… was him?

Finnian walked out of the café with stiff, heavy steps. Under the sunlight, Dexter stood there, staring at him in a daze.

Seeing Finnian looking as though his soul had been ripped out, he approached and said, “Boss, you heard everything, right? Who would’ve thought that the person Dr. Chavez had a crush on was actually you.”

Finnian still had his sunglasses back on, hiding the faint tremor in his eyes caused by the sheer shock.

“Why wasn’t it Simon Quinn?” Finnian’s voice carried a trace of suspicion. “Shouldn’t it have been him?”

Dexter suddenly looked down and let out a chuckle, a laugh that left Finnian utterly baffled.

“Boss, think back carefully on all your interactions with Dr. Chavez. You’ll definitely find some answers in there. Maybe you missed the signs, or maybe you just forgot. But as an outsider looking in, I’ve always believed that a reserved woman like Dr. Chavez wouldn’t be overly passionate even if

she loved someone deeply, let alone shout it from the rooftops.” Dexter could tell his boss was completely lost, so he finally voiced what he had been wanting to say all along.

Finnian slowly processed the words, staring blankly at Dexter.

“When Dr. Chavez doesn’t like someone, she rejects them outright. But when she does like someone, it really is hard to tell. She definitely wasn’t obvious about it.” Dexter had come to understand Kaia a bit by now. Her quiet, subtle warmth was likely the most intense emotion she had ever allowed

herself to feel.

Finnian’s brow furrowed into a deep knot. He had seen the name scrawled in her notebook a long time ago. Every now and then, he would try to guess which of the men around her it could be. Later, he had convinced himself it was Simon Quinn, knowing she shared beautiful childhood memories

with him.

He had guessed for five or six years, but he had never once suspected that it was him.

“It was me!” Finnian murmured softly, the words feeling more like a private confession.
