Chapter 54
“Stand right here, Kaia,” Silas said, reaching out to gently pull her toward him. Kaia’s back pressed into the corner of the elevator while Silas’s tall, broad frame stepped right in front of her, effectively shielding her from the crushing crowd.
Kaia leaned back quietly. Every time she breathed, she couldn’t help but catch the cool, distinct scent radiating from his chest–a mix of sandalwood and ambergris, a fragrance entirely unique to a young,
masculine man.
Kaia held her breath slightly and lowered her eyes.
Above her, Silas stood like a solid wall, granting her a moment of fleeting
peace.
He was also looking down, his gaze naturally falling upon her face.
Standing next to them, lugging a massive fruit basket and two giant bags of nutritional supplements, Franklin was sweating bullets. He took one look at his handsome boss and wisely fixed his eyes on the ascending
floor numbers.
Finally, they reached the nineteenth floor.
The crowd thinned out, and Silas sauntered lazily out of the elevator.
Kaia instinctively tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, the stifling feeling in her chest easing up a bit.
The client was in his fifties. The second Silas walked in, he turned on the
charm, sweet–talking the older man until his face broke into an affectionate, grandfatherly smile, insisting that his son take them out for lunch.
Silas politely deferred a few times, then turned to Kaia. “Are you free for lunch? If you don’t have anything going on, we can grab a bite and talk about the next steps for our partnership.”

Since he put it like that, Kaia practically had to say yes.
“You’re too kind, Mr. Peterson. Let’s get lunch, then,” Kaia agreed with a professional smile.
The group left the inpatient ward and headed for the elevators in the administrative building.
Mr. Peterson’s son needed to stop on the second floor to speak with a doctor, so Silas and Kaia got off there as well.
The second floor was a maze of intersecting corridors. As they stood near the entrance to a skybridge, two incredibly familiar figures unexpectedly stepped into their line of sight.
It was Finnian and Noelle.
Finnian was uncharacteristically dressed down today, wearing a dark casual jacket and slacks. Yet his tall, imposing figure still gave off that signature, untouchable aura that made him stand out instantly in any crowd.
Beside him, Noelle was wearing a loose cream–colored knit dress with a matching cardigan, her long hair draped softly over her shoulders. Oblivious to Kaia and Silas standing off to the side, the two were deep in conversation, walking slowly down the adjacent hallway.
The look Noelle gave Finnian was filled with a fragile, absolute dependence.
Kaia’s footsteps faltered. The direction they were heading was clearly marked by a massive, impossible–to–miss sign.
OB/GYN!
Kaia’s brain froze like a paused movie frame. The noise of the hospital vanished entirely, leaving only the sound of her own breathing in her
ears.
“Kaia…” Silas’s voice finally cut through the silence. “Do you want to go

over?”
Her heart, which had felt like it had stopped beating, slowly and heavily began to pound again. She bit her lip and said, “Franklin, could I ask you a huge favor? Can you sneak over and take a few photos of them? Try to get the OB/GYN sign in the shot if you can.”
Franklin stood there, absolutely terrified.
Take secret photos of the CEO’s private life?
Silas pulled a surgical mask from his pocket and tossed it to Franklin. “Hurry up. And be careful–don’t let my cousin see you.”
“I…” Franklin swallowed hard, put the mask on, and sprinted down the hall. Silas studied Kaia’s pale face and smiled faintly. “Gathering evidence?”
“Yeah,” Kaia replied quietly.
“When did you find out?” Silas asked.
Kaia let out a bitter laugh. “Not too long ago.”
Silas chuckled. “Then I’ve got you beat.”
