Chapter 55
Kaia paused, looking at the smiling, handsome face in front of her with complex emotions. “How long?”
Silas shrugged. “Oh, just about eight or nine years before you did.”
Kaia stared at him.
Silas’s smile gradually cooled. “I picked up on a few things because of my sister.”
Kaia felt some of her confusion clear up. Silas had a sister who, years ago, had been institutionalized for psychiatric treatment. Once she recovered, she was sent to live abroad. She had recently gotten married but had suffered a relapse and was still undergoing treatment.
Kaia knew better than to pry. This was Silas’s off–limits territory–his deepest wound.
The two of them stood behind a pillar, waiting. Shortly after, Franklin darted back, weaving between obstacles like a thief in the night, panting as he stopped in front of them. “Got ‘em. Mr. Sanders and Ms. Lawrence have an appointment with a specialist. Apparently, the doctor is a legend in obstetrics.”
Suppressing her surging emotions, Kaia said gratefully, “Thank you, Franklin. Please send all the photos to me.”
Catching his breath, Franklin nodded. “Will do, Dr. Chavez.”
Silas cast a concerned look at Kaia. “Are you holding up okay, Kaia?”
Kaia looked up toward the OB/GYN wing, a trace of disorientation in her
eyes.
“Let’s go. We have lunch to get to,” Kaia said, abruptly dropping the subject. She straightened her posture and led the way out.
Silas watched her resolute stride in silence for a few seconds before

stepping out to follow her.
After finishing lunch with the client and stepping out of the restaurant, a light drizzle had begun to fall.
Standing under the restaurant awning, Kaia watched a video her mother had sent. Brynlee was happily playing with her father’s pet parrot, looking absolutely thrilled.
Jane sent a follow–up text: ‘Let Brynlee stay and play here for the
afternoon. I’ll put her down for a nap. You go hang out with your friends.‘
Kaia knew her mother had sensed she was in a bad headspace lately and was trying to give her some room to breathe.
‘Okay, Mom. I’ll head over later, Kaia replied. When she looked up, she saw Silas finishing his goodbyes with the client.
Silas walked over, popping open a large black umbrella he had retrieved from his car.
“Where are you heading this afternoon?” Silas asked.
“Meeting a friend,” Kaia answered casually. In reality, her appointment was with her lawyer.
“Alright. Let me walk you to your car,” Silas offered, holding the umbrella high.
“Thank you.” Kaia stepped under the canopy, and the two walked toward her parked Mercedes.
Silas was tall, and he tilted two–thirds of the umbrella over her head. His opposite shoulder was quickly soaked by the rain.
“You go ahead, Kaia. Franklin and I need to head back to the office,” Silas said, waving.
“Okay. See you,” Kaia said, starting the car and pulling out into the misty rain.
Chapter 55
Quinn Finch’s law firm was located on an upper floor of a high–rise, with floor–to–ceiling windows looking out over the gloomy, gray city skyline.
The office was bright and perfectly climate–controlled.
Kaia arrived earlier than scheduled and was ushered to a long walnut
conference table by an assistant.
When Quinn walked in, he was carrying two cups of hot coffee.
Quinn was in his late forties, lean, and wore gold–rimmed glasses. He radiated a sharp, hyper–competent energy and was renowned as one of the city’s top attorneys for high–net–worth divorces.
Up until now, their communication had been entirely via phone and email. Today was their first official face–to–face meeting.
“Dr. Chavez, apologies for keeping you waiting,” Quinn said, taking a seat across from her, his tone dropping into a serious register.
Kaia nodded in greeting. His assistant knocked, dropped off a few files, and quietly retreated, ensuring the soundproof door clicked firmly shut
behind her.
