I frown, trying to understand what he’s implying. When I fail, I throw a lie. “No, I’m not curious. I’m beneath him, however, so if he wants to meet me, I should feel honored, right? I should oblige at once.”

He shakes his head. “Not if you don’t want to. I’m sure he’ll understand. I’ll tell him again when he asks me that you don’t want to meet him.”

I swallow hard. “He will… ask you again? To come and convince me?” The words feel audacious even as I say them—but there’s something triumphant in it too.

Could I make Knox wait until he becomes desperate?

The dangerous thought slips into my mind. What am I thinking?

Iver nods. “He did ask me again. Which is why I questioned you–about whether you changed your mind.”

“I was rude to him… outside the library,” I blurt out. “Perhaps he wants to punish me.”

An unexpected laugh escapes him before he covers his mouth. “No,” he says, straightening, making his face appear plain again. “He’s not going to punish you. Trust me, Luna Xena. The Prince has not forgotten what

“Neither has the boy,” he adds. “Princess Aria’s son, I mean,” he continues. “You saved him from the

My lips part slightly, and before I can stop it, I smile. A small one, but real. It surprises me. “He… does?” I ask quietly.

I don’t fully believe him, but I say it anyway. “It’s my birthday,” I admit. “And I’m not here for the trial–I know it’s a facade, and that you’re in on it. I just… wanted to take these to the Moon Goddess. Do you know where the temple is?” I ask.

He nods too slowly, gaze fixed on the sweets, for me not to feel alarmed. “I do. You don’t?”

“No.”

“I’ll take you,” he says, a little too quickly.

Relief slips out of me. “That would help. Thank you so much, Beta Iver.”

He’s still nodding as he glances over his shoulder. “Stay right here. I’ll be back!”

And then he leaves, scurrying out of the courtyard.

I stay. At first, I don’t think much of it. I just stand there, holding the bowl, watching people move around me, trying to ignore the way a few of them glance at me and away again. But a minute passes. Then another. And another. I shift slightly, adjusting my grip on the bowl as my fingers begin to ache.

“Where is he?” I mutter under my breath.

Five minutes. Seven. Ten.

A slow, creeping unease begins to settle in.

Did he leave? Did he just… abandon me here?

“Great,” I whisper. “Now you’re just standing here like an idiot.”
