When the World Ends, She Begins novel Chapter 30

"Does she know it was you?" Elena asked.

Owen remarked, "Of course she does. She was literally just telling the neighbors about it!"

"What?" Elena's face turned pale. "What should we do now? Do the neighbors believe her?"

Owen said confidently, "Don't worry. Who cares if they believe her or not? These weaklings still listen to me.

"With the world in chaos, it's better for people to be scared of me. But that damn Olivia—I'll have to take care of her sooner or later."

Elena said casually, "Owen, come on, she's just a widow. Getting rid of her would be nothing."

"You're right, Babe." Owen smirked, eyeing her up and down. "Let's head inside. Your man deserves a little reward."

Elena gave him a teasing smile. "Oh, stop it ... "

...

Inside the apartment building, every family stayed behind locked doors, whispering about what had happened earlier that day.

But at this point, no one really cared what was true or not.

Staying alive was the only thing on their minds.

Supplies were harder to come by with each passing day, and what people managed to find wasn't enough. Some came back with only a few packs of chips—definitely not enough to feed everyone at home.

Thinking about what lay ahead, each family grew more worried and hopeless.

On the 14th floor, Natalie sealed the windows and doors, set a pot on the burner, and got out mustard sauce and olive oil for the meal.

After spending several days up in the mountains, she decided to make a lamb stew for dinner to warm herself up.

The water started bubbling in no time, and Natalie tossed in the lamb meat, then called out to Lucky.

"Lucky, dinner time!"

Normally, Lucky would come running as soon as she smelled food, but this time she stayed curled up in its bed, not moving much.

Noticing something was off, Natalie rushed over. When she lifted Lucky up, she saw there was blood on the bedding.

Her chest tightened with worry. Was Lucky hurt?

She carefully checked the dog all over but didn't find any cuts or bites.

Did Lucky get hurt in the mountains, and I just didn't notice?

Heart aching, Natalie scooped Lucky into her arms and began checking her over, from head to paw. But no matter how carefully Natalie looked, there wasn't a single wound in sight.

Still, Lucky looked weak and wasn't acting like her usual self.

As Natalie tried to figure it out, she suddenly felt a warm spot on her hand and looked down. A single drop of blood had fallen onto her hand.

She lifted Lucky's backside for a closer look, and suddenly, everything clicked.

Seriously? Lucky is on her period!

Wait, dogs can get periods, too? Well, at least it wasn't an injury. Feeling relieved, Natalie searched through her storage space and finally found some dog diapers buried among piles of pet stuff.

Watching how gloomy Lucky looked, Natalie thought to herself. Even dogs can get moody and lose their appetite when they're on their period.

Sure enough, period doesn't play favorites—every girl gets her fair share of pain.
