But Owen remained humble and sincere. He said, "Everyone, don't be like this. It's understandable for the family to be upset after what happened. I was careless, and I promise I'll do a better job protecting every single person in the group from here on."
"You're being too humble, Owen."
"Yeah, Mr. Gatlin, you've already done more than enough. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't have found this food."
Owen felt pleased inside, but he kept a modest tone. "No, really, we only made it this far because of everyone working together."
Olivia, clearly annoyed by all the compliments being tossed around, stepped toward Owen with a sharp glare.
"I know it was you. Do you really think you can sleep peacefully now after murdering him?"
She then raised her voice so everyone could hear, "This man teamed up with his mistress to murder his wife. He even turned her body into jerky and hid it right in his house. My husband found out by accident.
"That's the reason my husband had to die. He knew too much.
"Now that the truth's out, you'd all better be careful."
She locked eyes with Owen one last time, then walked upstairs, ignoring everyone else.
The crowd went quiet for a moment. Then chaos broke out.
"Wait, what? Mr. Gatlin killed his wife?
"And Daniel knew? No wonder he and his wife were always hanging at the back of the team, keeping their distance from Mr. Gatlin ... "
"Come to think of it, we haven't seen Mr. Gatlin's wife in a while."
"I always wondered about that strange meat smell near his place ... "
"I noticed it too! I thought I was just imagining it because I was starving!"
"Wait ... Are you saying he actually ate ... "
Gasps filled the air as people stepped away in horror.
Owen's face went pale. "Don't believe what Olivia is saying!"
He quickly tried to keep calm. "Daniel's death was sudden. Olivia is just too heartbroken to think clearly. She's talking nonsense because she's overwhelmed. I get it."
Looking each person in the eye, he spoke in a serious tone, "You've all worked hard today. Go home and get some rest."
People exchanged looks, but no one said anything. Deep down, most didn't trust what Owen was saying.
Still, they had no real power here. Calling the police wasn't an option, and if they challenged Owen, they might end up just like Daniel.
It's not like they had any deep connection to Daniel anyway. Taking a stand for what's right was the police's job. They just wanted to survive.
Compared to Olivia, Owen had more authority and strength. Everyone quickly figured out which side was safer to stand on.
A few people still had objections, but their families quietly held them back.
"Mr. Gatlin makes a good point. We all know what kind of man you are. There's no way you'd kill someone, haha."
"Yeah, Olivia is just overwhelmed with grief."
