Lemira watched the “two-faced” girl put on her usual act, clutching her stomach without so much as a flinch from Lemira. After all, Lemira had seen Evelina’s tricks many times over the years; it was obvious at a glance that this was just an excuse to get out of what she’d promised.
Evelina looked pitifully at Evander and said, “Evander, I don’t think I can go kneel and pay my respects. My stomach hurts.”
Evander responded, “I know, you come first. You’re pregnant now—your situation is unique.”
“But I’m afraid Lemmy will be upset with me,” Evelina added with a deliberate glance at Lemira, her eyes glimmering with a hint of challenge.
Just as Evelina expected, Evander immediately turned on Lemira: “What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you see that Evelina isn’t feeling well? And you’re still forcing her to kneel? Do you even have a conscience?”
Lemira shot him a cold look. “Then why don’t you both just get out? This is my villa.”
Evander snapped back, “Didn’t you promise to leave this house to the next generation? That makes it ours now—if anyone should leave, it should be you!”
Lemira laughed icily. “You really are delusional. So, are you leaving on your own, or do I have to throw you out myself?”
“Lemira, don’t push it too far!” Evander was growing more and more resentful—how dare she trample on his pride like this!
Lemira turned to the butler. “Take all their things and put them outside the gate.”
The butler nodded and went upstairs with some staff to carry out her order.
Sensing the situation turning against her, Evelina quickly whispered, “Evander, what are we going to do?”
Evander, livid, shouted, “Lemira, say that again in front of Mom and Dad’s portraits—are you trying to drive us out and destroy us?”
“Kicking you out is destroying you? Sounds more like you can’t survive on your own, Evander. Don’t tell me you don’t have anywhere else to go?”
Evelina was visibly stunned, as if she couldn’t believe Asher would take such a stance. In the past, he would have immediately gone to confront Lemira.
What had changed?
Evander burst out, “Asher, we haven’t done anything! Lemira is being completely unreasonable. She knows Eve isn’t well, but she’s forcing her to kneel and pay respects. What if something happens to the baby?!”
“Evelina's only a few months along. How could kneeling do any harm? The doctor said she’s in great health.” Lucian’s voice was stern as he looked at Evander. “Besides, we haven’t even done a paternity test yet. Who knows if the child is actually yours?”
Evander’s face fell. “Lucian, can’t you just wish me well, for once?”
He had been hoping for this child so badly.
Lucian regarded Evander with a complicated look. “I’m doing this for your own good. We have to be careful. After all, Evelina is still the daughter of the man who murdered our parents!”
