Chapter 118

Alpha Emris

Contd.

“What none of you seem to be focused on is that we have a lycan problem.”

“Lycan!?” The elders gasp.

“Regan, shut up.” Silver says but he continues.

Okay, everyone, listen up! Apparently we have a cousin from our father’s brother who is by the way…a Lycan and word circulating is that he has interest in this pack. In taking it. Therefore, every piece of territory we hold is security. And you just handed some of it back!”

We haven’t received any formal intelligence on this Lycan coming to take revenge or whatever.” I can hear the flatness in my own voice.

Should we wait until we do?” Regan’s eyes come back to me. “Ever since you found her—” he gestures toward Demetra, “— you have not been thinking with your head. And you’re going to land this entire pack in danger because you can’t see past

your own-”

Choose your next word carefully.” My voice doesn’t rise.

‘Next.”

Whatever Regan just said…whatever he was implying, wherever that sentence was going – I’m not giving it the oxygen of a esponse. The elders are used to this. They’ve sat in enough of these rooms to know when to read the temperature and nove on. The only person in this room who hasn’t learned that rhythm yet is Demetra, and I can feel her watching me from he corner of my eye.

The, um- Florence clears her throat and reshuffles her papers. “The invitations for the bonding gala, Alpha. Are there any

acks you’d like to exclude from the guest list?”

The Irish Pack,” I say immediately.

Emris.” Demetra looks at me like I just suggested we set fire to an orphanage. “We’re inviting them.”

Demetra-

He saved our daughter. That is not up for discussion.”

look at her for a moment. She looks back at me.

Do whatever the Luna says,”

Alpha, It’s John this time. “There are some circulating reports that Alpha Slade may be positioning himself against you. Is hat currently under management?”

Explain that.”

Two of our Deltas were at a pub several nights ago. Slade’s Gamma was present, making comments to the effect that you should be watching your back. We know what he did in the Alpha fest. Therefore, if the Lion Pride Pack is on the gala invitation list-”

“Demetra. Can you not keep your own brother in line?” Regan asks.

“She’s Luna to you.” I correct him.

“I didn’t know Slade was-”

“It’s my fault.” I say it over her Demetra because she doesn’t need to carry the explanation for this and I’m not going to let her try. She doesn’t know the full shape of it. She doesn’t know about the night I slept with Slade’s mate. Then sent him a video of me with Demetra. And the other thousand things I’ve done.

Of course he’s going to have it out for me.

“I will talk to Slade before the gala. I’ll handle it.”

“One more item,” Jasmine says, and something in her delivery tells me this one has been sitting at the bottom of the list deliberately.

“Go ahead.” Demetra beats me to it.

“There is growing conversation across the pack regarding the question of succession. Specifically, which of the Alpha’s children holds the heir or heiress position. One born between the Alpha and his former Luna. One born between the Alpha and his true mate. The pack wants clarity.”

“Amira was born first, yes. But the order of birth is not what determines succession. What determines it is the nature of the bond between her parents. Her mother is my true mate and the Luna of this pack…both of that makes Amira first in line for the Alpha seat. When she comes of age, she will be trained accordingly.”

Regan is on his feet and the sound that comes out of him is somewhere between a growl and a word but lands as neither.

“She is a GIRL!”

“Girl?” I repeat the word back at him.

“Yes, GIRL!?”

“Trybrid blood doesn’t recognize gender, Regan. It recognizes lineage. It recognizes the bond it was born from. Milo will stand beside his sister, not above her. Both of them carry Trybrid blood. Both of them will make this pack formidable. And it will never be a competition between them because I am going to raise both of my children knowing what it means to put family before everything else.”

“Calm down, Regan. Why are you so agitated by this?” Mom asks.

The room stares at him. All of us, in the same moment.

“This isn’t the first time he’s acted this way toward the children,” Demetra says to me.

“What.”

Now I get on my feet to confirm that–

The last thing. The last thing I will allow in this pack house, in this family, in anything that carries my name is someone building division between my children.

I’m just… I’m looking out for Milo, Regan’s volume has dropped.

“I am Milo’s father. What exactly do you think you’re protecting him from? Let this be the last time. The absolute last time that the word ‘girl’ comes out of your mouth as a way to diminish my daughter. She is mine. And when she stands in front of
