Chapter 14
Demetra.
I set Amira down, and Milo immediately runs over, grabbing her hand to tug her toward the school.
“Milo, be careful!” I say, my eyes tracking them.
Mrs. Warton is at the door, ready to usher them inside. I take a step to follow when–

“It’s fine. My son is a gentleman.” That rough voice is one I woke up to this morning. It coils inside me, twisting stupid hope, searing hate, desperate passion, and anger into one impossible knot. All of it belongs to one man. One wolf.
My mind stutters when I look at him, refusing to believe Emris real. Surely, my traitorous mind wouldn’t conjure him here, not with our children present. But he is real and he’s walking toward me.
We’re the only parents here, both shamefully late. I don’t have to acknowledge him. I don’t have to speak. I reach for my car’s back door, intent on shutting him out when his hand slams against it and blocks me.
I’m forced to look at him again, forced to meet his gaze before I’ve even processed the wreck he made of my morning. My eyes trace the face I once knew so well, the eyes that no longer need a patch, the sharp jaw, the set of his mouth. He’s wearing a tight black shirt that does nothing to hide the slabs of muscles in his body.
“Can we talk?” Emris’s eyes drill into mine. I ignore him, reaching again to slam the door, his hand be damned. I won’t give him the satisfaction of my voice.
“I never took you for the silent type, mate.” The word ‘mate’ is a barb. “Do you need Slade here as a translator? You had plenty to say at the art show. Where’s that venom now? My question is, how many more identities do you have?”
He starts counting with his hands. “Demetra. Miss Pride. Metra. four years ago, I was cor mask-”

I slap his cheek with a crack that echoes in the quiet lot so well that his head snaps to the sy hand stings after I do but I speak.
“I won’t ask who raised you!” I hiss. “I know it’s that simpering fool, Derisha. But look at me. I am not her. I am not a fool like your stupid mother.”
Emris catches my hand, the one I used to slap him and yanks m forward. The heat of his skin burns mine, I don’t want to feel it! I’m already battling him in my dreams; the last thing I need is a real sensation to haunt me.
“Let go of me!”
“Good.” A grim satisfaction lights his eyes. “At least…now I know ou feel me. See me. Can talk to me
He’s looking at me hungrily, like he’d been starving for this sigh all morning. His gaze flicks from my nose to my lips, then drops to my chest. I’d rushed out so fast because Amira was late ‘d only thrown on a white crop top and jeans, no bra. I didn’t plan on getting out of the car.
Now, under his stare, the white cotton of my top is outlining the shape of my breast, making my nipples an undeniable point against the fabric. It wasn’t vulgar before. Now, under his are, it feels like I’m offering myself on a plate
I wrench my hand back.
“The next time you touch me, your entire pack will answer for
“Hmm. Spoken like a true Alpha’s daughter. Who would have guessed that you were once a maid?”

“It’s good that you can’t see a trace of who I used to be but listen isn’t it a curse that I can still see every flaw of the man you are?”
His eyes harden into chips of flint. “Be careful now.”
“You be careful. Don’t start a war because you can’t control your curiosity about the mate you discarded. Believe me, my father is waiting for an excuse to give you the lesson you desperately need.”
“Who is Amira’s father?
Emris’ next question is a low blow, aimed straight at my core. I try hard to breathe!
“I conceived Milo a month after you left. Our children… they look the same age.”
Why is he asking me again? Does he suspect that Amira is his? It doesn’t matter. I know his ego. I know exactly where to strike.
“Her father is everything you are not. A true Alpha. Think of the most powerful wolf you know… then imagine his shadow.” I lower my voice. “And while it only took him once to plant my daughter in me… I begged him to take me from behind with my face in the sheets, on my knees worshipping him, over every piece of furniture that would hold us. Does that answer satisfy your… curiosity?”
“An…an…an…Alpha?”
“I’m the great whore, remember? And he was so much better than you. I never had to pretend with him.” I roll my eyes for emphasis and turn to shut the back door of my car. I can see it’s working…all that furious hot blooded veins standing out on his forehead, the rapid rise and fall of his chest. Good.
He forces out a dark chuckle.
“Never mind. I’ll repay all these…. pleasantries by taking Slade’s hand at the Alpha Fest.”
His words are a bucket of ice water dumped over my triumph.
“Excuse me?”
“Slade put his hands on my Luna, Elena. So I will take his whole wrist. I’ll make him the Alpha of one hand, and I will make sure you watch.” his voice drops to an intimate growl.
Emris steps back. Fear is a cold claw in my stomach, but I refuse to let it show.
“But of course, it’s not personal…it’s the Alpha Fest and accidents can happen. You know? Wrists and legs can be uprooted. bent right out of their sockets and left trembling in the air-”
“Is that the story Elena Orient fed you? How convenient. Between you and your wife, I can’t tell who is more senseless. How is it that you two produced an intelligent boy? What a disaster that he got you both as parents. One can’t leave his ex-alone. and the other is just an idiotic liar. You overestimate yourself.”
I watch my words land on him but it seems like nothing hurts Eris.

“You really think so, Demi? You think I overestimate my power? The way he says it so certain that it makes my own wolf whimper inside me. Afterall, he is the most powerful force I’ve er encountered.
Now, all I want now is to run home and warn Slade.
“And before you come for my character,” he continues, “I wonder if your daughter knows what kind of mother she has At least you can see my son’s intelligence. Does your daughter know what price you paid for the life you have? Are you going to

“I will teach her that love is not blind! I will teach her that a ‘fate mate’ means nothing. I will teach her to stay away from men like you, from families like your wretched one. I will teacher to stomp her feet when she walks and to serve no one an explanation. That is what I will teach her. I will use every single lesson I learned from you.”
A shadow passes over his face that might be remorse, but I quash the thought instantly. Emris doesn’t have a heart.
