“He is my mate! I have a right to be with him!” Teddy yells back at me, even though I’ve made it clear I’m in no mood to discuss her foolish little bond. The first issue is that she now knows Demetra is my mate. The second and far more pressing is that I still don’t understand what happened in my chest when that little girl called my name.
“What is going on!?” Our mom descends the grand staircase. I shut my eyes. It’s not just her; it’s the whole damn family…my brothers, and Elena in her night robe.
“Where did you both go? I saw your car leave.” Elena says.
“Your daughter has found her mate,” I tell my mother flatly. Her eyes widen, and then a smile begins to form.
“Who is he?”
“You’d better wipe that smile off your face. It’s Alpha Ronin’s nephew.”
“What!?” Regan barks.
“N…No.” Mom whispers and her horrified gaze swings to Teddy.
“His nephew?” Elena repeats, as if she hasn’t heard correctly.
“He is my mate! The Moon Goddess gave us to each other. Why hould we reject each other just because all of you don’t like it!” Teddy shouts, throwing the same question at them that I refused to answer the entire drive home.
“Wait. Did you go and get her from there?” Silver asks.
“What do you
think?”
“You… you went into the Lion Pride territory?” Mom’s voice rises in alarm, and Teddy just shuts her eyes.
“Girls go see their boyfriends all the time! You’re all just acting like this because he’s from the Lion Pride. This is why I didn’t tell anyone! And plus-”
“And plus, you’ve started having sex with some kid you don’t even know?” I cut her off with a low growl. “Are you insane?”
“Do you know what the Lion Pride pack did to your father?” My mother’s voice trembles with a grief that’s never fully healed. “He died because of Alpha Ronin, and that idiot never to us how. Whatever happened, Roum knows. They are ou enemies. How… how can fate give you a mate from there? It doesn’t matter. A rejection will happen You’re young, you can wait for another.”
“No, Mom…mom, I don’t want to wait for another mate! I alread to say her new found knowledge about me “It’s not like I’m the
have feelings for Eden.” Teddy looks at me and she decides
ly one who has a mate from there-
“To your room. Now” I don’t even raise my voice. Teddy knows love her more than anything in this world, but she also knows what it means to cross her Alpha.
“I hate you all.” She spits the words through her tears. Though sing her cry feels like a punch to the gut, I won’t let sentiment cloud the only solution. Teddy turns and runs to heroom with sobs echoing down the hall
Elena looks at me. “What was she about to say?”
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.” I grit.

Chapter 17
I need to get out of here and go to my office. I need a cold whisky to kill whatever this feeling is in my chest.
“How did you get her out?” Silver asks. Of course he’d ask, because they sure as hell didn’t invite me in.

“I had to sneak in. Met the whole damn family, including Ronin made it clear there would be a rejection.” I grunt, already heading for the door.
“I can’t believe our families would have to see each other again. will handle this. I have no interest in letting our packs come together. They are no match for us, and they never will be
I can hear mom’s voice as I leave first, retreating to my office. I pop open a bottle of top-shelf liquor and pour it over ice. I don’t wait for it to get cold; I just drain the glass, letting the burn scorch a path down my throat. I need to think. To process the chaos of last night.
I was this close to breaking the bond. I had the words on my tongue. Then that little girl called me. By my name. It doesn’t even feel that way when my own son says it. It was… different. So what is this? Why is my wolf making it so damn hard to sever the tie to Demetra?
Moons, it’s a good thing she called me. The thought is a bitter relief. I definitely did not want to be put on the spot to break what’s left between Demetra and me. It was only yesterday I had the most vivid dream of her. Sure, it was an illusion, but it was enough to set my blood on fire.
I sit in the deliberate dark of my office for at least ten minutes before I hear the door open. I don’t turn, just push my neck back against the headrest of my couch.
“Did you see that Miss Pride?” Elena’s voice breaks the quiet as she flicks on the overhead light, flooding the room with a glow I’d intentionally avoided. “Because now that I think about i she looks like that girl who used to be a maid for you. I don’t remember her name, but they both have that white hair.”
She’s talking about Demetra.
“Milo?”
“He’s asleep, but he was upset you didn’t eat dinner with him. Plus, you took him late to school.” Elena murmurs as she steps deeper into the room. “You’re not exactly dad of the week, are you?” She pours herself a generous glass of my liquor without asking.
I brought up Milo intentionally as a subject shift but her mind is already circling back.
“Anyway, do you see the resemblance between that silly maid gi and Miss stupid pride?”
I don’t answer.
She settles into the chair beside mine and crosses her legs, letting the robe part to reveal her thigh. “By the way, that maid you had back then… I wonder where she is. I should’ve known swas in love with you, but I didn’t think she’d have the courage to do anything about it. Wherever she is, I hope she remembers who the Luna of the Black Covenant Pack is”
“Hmm.” I reply in a noncommittal way.
“You’re moody”
“No, I’m upset.” I open my eyes and drain the last of the amber quid from my glass.
Elena leans forward and sets her own glass down “Then let me ke your stress off”
It’s an invitation. Her robe gapes open, and she waits for my eye she rises and lets the robe slide from her shoulders to pool at he
to follow the path of her naked cleavage. When they don’t feet. Now I see why she turned on the light.
“Emris,” she softens her voice. “Just take it all out on me. Rough As long as you want”

She removes everything until she stands completely naked before me. It doesn’t stir me. Not even the faintest flicker. It’s the same reason I can’t share a bed with her. When I sent Demetra away, I didn’t realize my wolf’s claim on her was so absolute it would extinguish all desire for anyone else. My sexual life ended when Demetra left. The only reason Milo exists is because of a broken night where I was drowning in liquor after months of searching empty leads for Demi. I was drunk enough to mistake Elena for Demetra’s because she was on my bed which still carried my mate’s scent.
