“Everyone. I mean everyone is talking about how you didn’t attend yesterday’s Alpha Fest.” Tiffany scrolls through her phone. “The Iconic Miss Slap didn’t show up today. Where is Miss Slap? We want Miss Slap. The hashtags are literally crazy.”

She reads another one and snorts. “This person said you should fun for office.”

I barely hear her. My mind is still stuck in that storage room with Emris. His hands. His mouth. The way he looked at me after. I keep scrubbing my skin raw in the bathroom, but I still feel him everywhere.

“Today is going to be insane. Sure you wanna go?” Eden says.

I nod, even though I’m not sure of anything anymore. Today is the day Emris promised to hurt Slade. I have to be there.

My phone buzzes on the table and it’s from Slade. The text is short: Come to the storage area. I stand up, then hesitate. Tiffany and Eden are old enough to know what’s happening between the packs. And honestly? They should know what Slade’s been planning.

“Hey, can you both come with me?” I ask.

Tiffany doesn’t look up from her phone. “I’m not done reading the tweets. This one says-”

“Tiff. Put the phone down. This is more important.”

Something in my voice makes her pause. Eden gets up on his feet.

We walk outside, past the pack house, toward the storage buildings I saw the other day. I tie my hair up as we get closer and my nerves twist in my stomach. Robin, Slade’s Beta, is standing outside in full uniform. Several gammas are scattered around, holding chains and some kind of whip-looking tools I don’t recognize.

“Whoa.” Eden stops walking. “What’s happening?”

Robin folds his arms, grinning. “You’re about to see something really cool.”

I don’t say anything. I just wait, hoping no one can still smell Emris on me. I’ve showered twice. Three times. But my wolf is quieter now, satisfied in a way that makes me feel sick.

The storage room door slides open, and more gammas come ou dragging something.

Tiffany screams.

“OH MY GOD!”

She grabs my arm, yanking me back as we all stumble away from the sight. Six barghests emerge on each side….twelve total, led on heavy chains that the gammas can barely hold.

These aren’t mere dogs. They’re nightmares,

Their teeth are the size of my fingers, jagged and uneven like broken glass, dripping thick ropes of saliva that hang from their black lips. The drool is yellowish, almost glowing, and it hisses when it hits the ground. Their muscles bulge under matted fur, rippling with every step, chests so wide they look like they could crush a car. Their eyes are red….not like wolf red, but burning, bloody red, with pupils that are just slits of black.

And the sound they make. It’s not a growl. It’s a rumble from deep in their chests that vibrates through the ground and up into my bones. One of them snaps at a gamma, and its jaws close with a sound like a bear trap slamming shut.

“WHY ARE THERE HUNTING DOGS HERE?!” Tiffany shrieks from behind me. “They are dangerous! I don’t think we can use them for security!”

Slade walks out, calm as anything, holding a piece of raw meat. The barghests go insane…lunging, snarling, fighting against their chains to get to it. Their saliva glands pulse, dripping more of that burning drool.

“This isn’t for security.” Slade tosses the meat to the lead barghes. It doesn’t even chew. It just swallows it. “This is for

tomorrow.”

“Wait.” Eden steps forward carefully. “What do you mean?”

“Alpha Emris and his pack boys have been running their mouths Robin says with a nasty smile. “Talking about how he’s gonna take Slade’s wrist. At the supply store today, they were laughing, calling him ‘one-handed Alpha’ to my face. But little do they know…” He chuckles, folding his arms. “Their Alpha has weakness.”

“Yeah, he’s a hybrid.” Tiffany says. “But the moment he growls, these dogs won’t come near him.”

I close my eyes for a second too long.

“Wrong.” I hear myself say.

Everyone looks at me.

I know Emris more than anyone here. I know about the flinching in his sleep, the way he’d jerk awake gasping, the battles he fights in his nightmares against a prison that doesn’t exist anymore. I know he hasn’t beaten it. He just hides it better now.

“Emris is afraid of them.” I say quietly. “He’s afraid of whistling sounds too. They take him back to the time he spent in that dungeon when he was a kid.”

I force a small smile so I don’t look as wrecked as I feel. If Slade doesn’t do this, Emris is going to hurt him. Bad. In a way he can’t come back from.

So even though every part of me hates this…even though my wolf is whining somewhere deep in my chest, this is the only option we have.

“But… how are you gonna do it?” Tiffany asks, eyes still wide from the barghests. “The Alpha Fest is today. Can you even control those things?”

“Yeah. We’ve been training them. All our Alpha has to do is put a scent on him….something the barghests will chase.”

“But what if Alpha Emris fights them off?”

Robin answers with that nasty smile still on his face. “That’s where the whistles come in. They’ll distort his senses, make him fight his trauma before he can even think about fighting the barghests. They’ll probably rip his hands off first.”

I gasp before I can stop myself.

Slade’s head snaps toward me. I clear my throat, trying to cover, but the sound already escaped.

“But if this happens…” Eden’s voice cracks. “What happens to me and Teddy? If something happens to Emris-”

“Everything is not about you, boy.” Slade hisses.

Eden stares at him for a

anger building in his eye then just turns and walks away.

“Eden?” I call after him, but he doesn’t look back.

“I’ll talk to him.” Tiffany squeezes my arm before jogging after him.
