Slade appears with security flanking him. I forgot he’d notice Emris arrived. Now I see our guests staring. The ones outside taking pictures of their kids remember exactly what happened a Alpha Fest. Seeing Emris here, they’re already bracing for
blood and claws.
I spot Dad using two fingers to signal more security. They start moving in, hands on those machines that deliver electric shocks. Oh no.
“What the fuck are you doing here!?”
“Slade.” I throw myself between them, and the second I do, they both press into me. Emris against my back until I feel Emris’ chest against my spine before my brother sees that and rips me toward him.
“Stop it!” I grab Slade’s hand, forcing him to look at me. “I’m not scared of Emris, so stop. Kids are here. They’re going to think this is a-”
I’m talking to Slade but he’s not even looking at me. His eyes are bleeding yellow. Dad hasn’t reached us yet.
Since he’s not listening, I spin and put my hand on Emris’ chest. The moment I touch him, he looks down at me.
“Not on Amira’s birthday. Please. Don’t fight.” I hate the plea in my voice, but I mean it. Every word.
ever
Emris lips part as I push against his chest, and he lets me move Him backward. That’s the only way I could ever move him…if he allows it.
“Got it.” Emris’ voice is low.
“Alpha Emris.” Dad arrives, radiating authority.
“I’m not here to fight.” Emris keeps his eyes on me for a beat longer before addressing Dad. “Your guests are already taking their kids inside. It’s better we stop-”
“You’re not here to fight!?” Slade’s voice cracks with disbelief.
“Amira sneaked an invitation card to Milo.” I hiss at Slade. “That’s how he’s here. Our kids are friends.”
Slade shakes his head at me like I’ve lost my mind. “And you’re going to let him stay because of that. It’s obviously a mistake
So-”
“Milo and Amira are friends. So drop it,”
“Friends? Friends? Do you really-”
“Drop it, Slade!” Dad says.
I watch the betrayal burn in Slade’s eyes. He is looking at me like I’ve chosen sides against him. I know that expression….if I let him keep talking, this will escalate. He storms off, shoving pat a cluster of guests who scramble out of his way. I take a deep breath, watching the entire party exhale with me as they realize the males wont fight.
“I want three of you at every axis. North and south.” Dad commands security.

Chapter 41
Emris smiles. “If I was coming here to fight, it would have happened already, old man.”
Dad’s jaw tightens but he doesn’t rise to the bait.
“Alex, can you take Emris to the parents’ area?”

“I want to wish the girl a happy birthday.” Emris glances toward where Amira is playing. “I have a gift for her in the back of my Jeep, but your security wouldn’t let me bring it in.”
“Go check it. Make sure it’s safe, then bring it in.” I say to Alex. He speaks into his intercom to the
guys
at the gate.
I turn for a second and whisper to dad. “Dad, it’s fine.”
He kisses my forehead before speaking.
“I’ll
go
check on Slade.”
I nod, catching my Aunts staring at me from across the lawn. Great. I’m going to hear about this later.
The security guards return, and I literally blink at what they’re carrying. Thirteen of our strongest gammas are struggling under the weight of a giant Barbie Dreamhouse-no, not a Dreamhouse. A castle. A pink, glittering, multi-level Barbie castle that looks like it costs more than my first car.
“WOW.” The word ripples through the guests.
Amira spots it and jumps up from wherever she was. I watch her sprints across the grass, little legs pumping, pink dress flying.
“Amira, slow down-“I start, but she’s already halfway, about to trip on absolutely nothing like she always does-
Emris had already started walking towards her. One second he’s tanding near the security, the next he’s scooping her up mid-stumble before she hits the ground. He lifts her in the air, settling her against his side like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Like he’s done it a thousand times to her.
My heart stops.
I watch him hold my daughter. My five-year-old birthday girl daughter. She’s laughing, already pointing at the castle, completely unaware that a stranger just saved her from eating grass is her dad. Emris is nodding along, saying something I can’t hear, and she’s talking a mile a minute like she’s known him forever.
Something burns behind my eyes. It’s tears. Quickly, it rolls free before I can stop it. I swipe at my face, swallowing and pretending to fix my makeup, adjusting imaginary smudges under my lashes.
“I got it for you.” I hear Emris say to her. His voice is softer than ve ever heard it. Amira looks shy for once, tucking her chin like she’s embarrassed by the attention. He sets her down and shimmediately runs to the castle, Milo right behind her.
I hold myself together as I watch them circle the massive pink stucture, Amira is jumping and squealing while Milo is pointing at different parts….it does something to my chest. I lift my eyes and find Emris watching her too. There’s this look on his face. Pride. Like he knows he just gave his own daughter the best gift in the world and her reaction is everything he wanted.
He looks like a father.”
Amira stops jumping all of a sudden and her little face crumple ler lips start trembling, eyes squeezing shut like she’s about to burst. I rush to her, and Emris is right there with me.
“Amira, why are you crying?” I crouch down and she launches herself at me, burying her face in my shoulder with her small body shaking. I pat her back and chuckle. “Are you that happy? Huh?”

“Here.” Emris gives me a handkerchief. I take it without looking him, dabbing at her eyes as gently as I can.
“Why are you crying, Amira? You’re ruining the glitter on your face.”
