When You Were My Mate (Demetra and Emris) novel Chapter 63

Chapter 63

Emris.

“Daddy!”

Milo sprints at me in his little sportswear but the moment he spots Demetra standing next to me, his trajectory shifts like he’s been pulled by gravity.

“Angel! Angel!”

Look at this brat. He doesn’t even care about his father at all.

Demetra lowers herself like she’s home base. She hugs him and Her face goes soft in a way I don’t see often. She holds his little cheeks and Milo grins at her like she hung the moon.

Then I see Amira. Moment I do, something in my chest tightens it’s that thing that comes alive when a father recognizes his pup is safe. This wild little girl starts running forward, little legs Humping, while one of the school staff trails behind making sure she doesn’t fall. Her backpack bounces-

I scoop her up and her little arms wrap around my neck.

“Hi.” She waves her tiny hand in my face, fingers wiggling. “Hi, daddy.”

“Hi, love.”

She chuckles, that little face…those cheeks, those eyes, those lips that I could swear look like mine. But that would be far reaching. I’m not even her father.

She’s so beautiful. Prettiest little girl I’ve ever seen. Dark lashes. Skin like honey. That white hair that matches her mom’s. And something about holding her…about the way she fits in my hands, so small, so fragile, it makes my chest do something I don’t have a name for.

Amira starts telling me about her day. What she learned. Some kid named something. Another kid who did something. I don’t catch half of it because I’m too busy watching her little mouth move, too busy feeling her weight against me, too busy wanting to protect her from everything in this world that might ever hurt her.

“Oh, mommy!” Amira spots Demetra and wiggles like she wants down.

I try to set her on her feet but she tightens her hold around my neck and refuses to let go.

“Amira, stop that.” Demetra says.

Amira pouts and rests her head on my chest like she’s staking a claim.

Demetra reaches for her. “Let me get her off you real quick-”

“No.” The word comes out before I think. “No, it’s fine.”

It’s not like I want to let go

either.

“Come on, you two. Jurassic City, Ice cream. What do you say?”

“Yes! Yes! YES!”

Milo explodes like a firework by jumping and spinning. I chuckle at his reaction, about to look at Demetra to see if she’s laughing too.

I turn and spot some Lunas. Alphas too. A whole group of them coming out of the school, staring at us with depraved whispers in their mouth.

Shit. I almost forgot about the stupid rumour Elena helped spread.

She must have thought I was stupid enough to believe she wasn’t part of that. But I remember what she did to that Luna years ago…..the one who insulted her about us not sharing a bedom.

That Luna made one comment and Elena destroyed her. Tore apart her reputation piece by piece until she had nothing left.

That’s when I offered her divorce the first time because what’s the point of being Luna if you’re that torn apart by rumours? What’s the point if you’re constantly hurt by whispers and I’m not changing anything?

“That’s her….fucking diamond of the fest.”

“Look at her, think she’s luna material now?”

“Probably spread her legs the same way she spreads paint…”

“She’s not even pretty, just… available…”

“Surprised she’s showing her face after what happened last time..

I see Demetra’s face and her eyes go somewhere far away. She’s holding Milo’s hands in a world tilting sideways, not reacting out loud…so that’s the worst part. She’s bracing like she’s done this before and knew this would happen.

My wolf scratches under my skin.

“Come on.” I tell her.

She blinks. Takes Milo’s hand and walks toward the car where we keep both the kids.

While she’s tucking them in, I make a call to someone who I think can help me calm down the rumours. I already put a call through to the school after Elena mentioned that the Lunas said they would do some sort of vote to kick a little girl out. I still have to talk to Demetra about that. I need to apologize for not handling it sooner and protecting her kid the way I should have.

For the vote part, I made a clear threat to the school that if they removed Amira for any reason due to this rumour, I would completely claw through the principal and through the teachers until they have no staff left.

Really, there was no use of physical threats knowing how much onations I give to the Magnus just because my son is there. We’re talking seven figures annually. The entire technology upgrade last year came from my pocket. So, one delayed cheque and their budget implodes.
