Where The Ice Gives Way (Charlotte and Blake) novel Chapter 228

Chapter 228 Goodbye

Blake

Well, that could have been bad.

I’ve been telling Theo for way too long that messing around with human girls was a bad idea. He didn’t listen, did he? The always preferred learning things the hard way.

He’s lucky his soulmate is literally his perfect match.

I glance over at him, and he is watching Emily like she is the only thing keeping his bones in place.

Then I look farther down the table and spot Charlie grinning like a lovesick fool at Jessica.

I mentally note that I should probably have the same talk with him later. Whether he will listen or not, I have no idea.

Then I look at Lotty. My other half. My soulmate. The girl fate carved out of winter and put directly in my path.

I would have been a fool not to wait for her.

“You got plans later, pretty girl?” I ask.

“Nope.” She rests her head on my shoulder with a blissful little sigh. “Nothing planned today.”

“Mind if I fill that time?”

She lifts her head just enough to glare at me. “With what? It’s not more work, is it?”

1 laugh, brushing a loose strand of hair away from her cheek. “I wouldn’t do that to you. No. I’ve got something I want to show

Something I have been working on for weeks in the background of everything else going on. Between school, training, patrols, pack

and whatever new disaster comes shifting at our borders, I have been stealing time where I can.

The rest of the school day crawls by. I get through classes with half my mind on Lotty and the other half on what will be w beneath the trees. By the time the final bell rings, I am already at her locker, leaning against the one beside it like I haven’t counting down the seconds.

She rounds the corner with her friends, and the second she sees me, she shakes her head but still slides her hand into thing. on then, Captain Suspicious.”

I lead her out to the car and take the familiar route home.

“I thought you were taking me to my surprise?”

“I am.”

“This is home.”

“Sharp as ever, pretty girl.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “Blake.”

I squeeze her hand, trying not to give anything away. “You need warmer clothes.”

When we pull into the driveway, Mum is already waiting near the front door with the kind of innocent expression that means she

ows everything. Lotty looks from her to me.

“Is your mum in on this?”

I laugh and climb out before she can interrogate me, and Mum takes over the moment we step inside.

Come on, sweetheart,” she says. “Let’s get you into something warmer.”

Lofty lets herself be led upstairs, still watching me like she is trying to read the entire plan off my face.

She catches me staring and lifts a brow. “What?”

“You are beautiful,” I say slowly.

Het cheeks turn pink, and she looks away fast. “You’re distracting me because you’re hiding something.”

“Both things can be true.”

“Okay,” Lotty says. “Take me to this suspicious outdoor thing.”

I hold out my hand and lead her to the car.

I take the long way through town, driving slower than I need to, talking about nothing important until Theo’s voice slips through

the link.

Everyone’s here.

My hands tighten briefly on the wheel.

Okay. It’s time.

The town slips behind us, replaced by snowbanks and bare trees. The road narrows, curving toward the place that is still a scar in
