One of his ears twitches at the sound of my voice, but his head stays low, and his body resine sill. His pas are sunk into the snow, his shoulders Broad

Everything about him should make me run,
He is too big. Too impossible. Too much.
And yet, his eyes stay on mine, green and watchful and painfully familiar, and some part of me keeps insisting that I know him. That dhe thing in front of me is still Charlie, even though my eyes are telling me that people cannot turn into wolves, and wolves cannot look at you like boys who’ve hurt your feelings.
drop to my knees in front of him before I can think better of it.
“What am I doing?” I whisper to myself, but my hand is already lifting, shaky and unsure, stopping halfway between us.
“Can I?” I ask, even quieter now, because I have no idea what the rules are for this. I don’t know how a wolf is supposed to answer a question.
He shuffles forward on his belly, slow enough that I could move back if I wanted to. Slow enough that it almost feels like he is asking too. When his head finally reaches my hand, he lifts it just slightly, pressing the soft fur between his ears into my waiting palm.
Warmth runs through me at the contact.
It is strange and sudden, spreading from my hand into my wrist, up my arm, and into the centre of my chest. His fur is softer than I expected, thicker to My fingers sink into it, and for a few seconds I forget the cold, the park, the swings creaking behind me, and the fact that I am kneeling in the snow, touching a creature that should not exist.
A low rumble vibrates beneath my hand, and I freeze.
That snaps something inside me back into place, and all at once my brain catches up with my body.
I rip my hand away and scramble to my feet, my heart leaping so hard it almost hurts.
“What the hell am I doing?” I breathe, backing away from him.
The wolf whimpers.
“Oh no, you don’t.” I lift both hands, pointing at him. “You are not a puppy.”

His ears flatten, and I see the change in his eyes before I even move, like he knows I am about to make a break for it.
Before I can turn, his whole body jerks.
No, it doesn’t jerk.
It breaks.
The sound that comes out of him is low and awful, all cracking bones and moving limbs, and I stumble back with one hand clamped over my mouth as fur
ripples like water across his body. His legs bend at impossible angles. His spine twists. The snow beneath him churns as he pulls in on himself and stretch
out again, changing so fast and so terribly that my mind cannot keep up with what my eyes are seeing.
Then the wolf is gone.
Charlie is on the ground in his place, breathing hard, one hand pressed into the snow.
Completely naked.
“What the fuck, Charlie!” I throw both hands into the air and immediately turn my face away. “What the actual fuck!”
“Jess, wait,” he says quickly, voice rough and panicked. “Don’t go. Please.”
“Go?” I laugh, but it comes out high and thin and not even close to normal. “I don’t even know where my legs are right now.”
“I’m sorry.” He scrambles behind the tree again, and I hear him swearing under his breath as fabric rustles. “I should have shifted back out of sight.”
“Do you think that is the main issue here?”
“No. Definitely not. Jess, please, I’m sorry.”

There is more rustling, another muttered curse, and then he comes back around the tree, pulling his pants up, the rest of his clothes clutched in one ha

“Jess, okay. Look.” He holds both hands up, his eyes pleading with me in a way that is so painfully Charlie I almost hate him for it. “It’s me. Still me.”
“Charlie…” My voice shakes. “This is… this is a lot. I think I might be losing it.”
“You’re not.”
“That is exactly what someone would say to a person who is losing it.”
I turn away from him and stare at the swings instead, because swings are normal. Bark chips are normal. Rusty chains creaking softly in the wind are normal. Boys turning into wolves in parks after dark are not normal.
