Chapter 257 The Shift We Should Have Had

The backyard is silver under the moon, snow gathered in soft banks along the fence and across the open training space Gareth keeps cleared. The fire pit catches quickly, flames licking up into the dark as Gareth feeds it more wood.

Together, we lay blankets across the packed snow near the fire, close enough for warmth but far enough that Jess will have room when the

shift takes her. Blake shakes out another blanket beside me.

This is what Charlie and I should have had.

I blink hard and look back toward the house.

Charlie appears at the back door with Jess in his arms.

She is curled against his chest, trembling violently, her face pressed into his neck. Charlie’s face is pale, but his steps are careful, and he

carries her like she is the most precious thing he has ever held.

Jess’s parents arrive just as he reaches the bottom step.

Elena starts forward, but Callum catches her hand, stopping her gently before she rushes in. His own face is ruined with fear, but he holds

himself back. Giving her space. Letting the pack work.

“We’re here, honey. Mum and Dad are right here,” he says softly.

That kind of love hurts to watch.

As Jess grips my hand, Shanti stirs inside me, alert and aching.

Like something in Jess is calling to something in me.
