Whispers of Destiny: His Belated Love novel Chapter 199

In the following days, Maxwell didn't come around as Yolanda had predicted. Even the news about paying off that whopping debt of 1.2 billion was relayed to her by Yolanda. As for him, he seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth.

After the divorce, their social circles severed ties, and nobody mentioned him in front of Rosemary. She'd occasionally hear his name in financial news but never saw him – he almost became a mythical figure in her world.

Just when Rosemary was about to forget the whole ordeal, she received a text from Maxwell: "When do you get off work?"

Rosemary glanced at it and didn't respond; she was in the middle of hashing out the nitty-gritty details with an architect from Traversing City.

"I'm waiting for you downstairs at the Gellar Group."

"Got something to tell you."

"Rosemary..."

Her phone kept buzzing, prompting the architect she was liaising with to put down his notebook: "Maybe you should reply. With this many messages, it must be urgent."

"Sorry," she said, grabbing her phone and promptly blacklisting Maxwell. After that, her phone was silent – peace at last.

Tonight, the whole project team was burning the midnight oil, working late. By the time they wrapped up, Rosemary had completely forgotten Maxwell might still be downstairs. Even if she did remember, she wouldn't bet on him waiting there for so long.

She wasn't that conceited.

Martin stepped out of his office just as Rosemary was leaving. "I'll give you a lift."

"No need, I'll grab a cab..."

"It's late, and you're a woman on her own – not safe. I don't want to see you in tomorrow's news."

Rosemary tried to refuse, but the peanut gallery had already piped up: "Rosemary, just say yes. In our manager Martin's head, every cab driver in the world is a creep."

Gossip spread like wildfire in the office, and Martin's crush on Rosemary was an open secret. Everyone knew about it except, perhaps, the security department's dog, and they were all eager for a show.

Unfazed by the public teasing, Martin owned it: "Shall we go, or do you want to stick around and give them more to talk about?"

Rosemary: "..."

As the elevator arrived, Martin and Rosemary stepped in first, while the others waved them off: "We just remembered some work we need to discuss. You two go ahead."

"..."

The underground parking lot was deserted late at night, save for a few cars scattered about. Maxwell's Maybach stood out like a sore thumb.
