Naomi had assumed the driver would be waiting, but he wasn't there.
"He's probably just delayed. You should head inside."
The dorms had a curfew, and if Naomi didn't go soon, she might not make it in.
"Okay."
"Tell your driver to drive safely when he gets here."
Lennon nodded with a soft "Mm."
Naomi got out of the car.
In the short walk to the dormitory entrance, she found herself looking back several times.
A strange feeling washed over her, one she couldn't quite describe.
It felt like she was reluctant to leave, but another voice in her head kept asking why. No matter how nice Lennon was to her, they were still practically strangers.
The realization left Naomi feeling a little down.
After everything they'd been through, she couldn't figure out where she and Lennon stood.
As Naomi entered the dormitory building, she glanced back one last time and saw the car driving away.
Had the driver arrived?
Naomi felt a bit dazed, her heart feeling hollow as the car disappeared. She stood there for a while before finally heading upstairs to her room.
The next morning, Patricia was no longer surprised to see her magically reappear in the dorm.
"This guy you're seeing is a real gentleman."
"If this were the old you, wouldn't you have just stayed out for the night? This guy has sent you home seven or eight times out of ten. That's how you know he's really looking out for you. Staying out all the time is a bit much for us college students... You have no idea what people were saying back then..."
Patricia's brow furrowed. "Those posts all got reported and deleted, but you can't stop the whispers. You know how it is—college students can be naive, but you can't stop some people from being naturally malicious."
Nasty comments like that were common on the forums. They were always posted anonymously, with people hiding behind their screens to vent their frustrations.
Patricia added, "I've said it before, the school forum shouldn't allow anonymous posting. It just emboldens the creeps. But of course, nobody at the school listens to me."
Naomi listened in a daze. She had always thought people disliked her just for being so obsessed with Zebulon, but she never imagined their malice ran so deep.
But she quickly came to terms with it.
Her conscience was clear about things she hadn't done. As for what other people thought, she no longer cared.
"Let's get to class."
When Naomi and Patricia arrived at the classroom, they saw Carter and his friends handing out invitations.
"It's Zebulon's birthday. You have to come!"
