Who’s the Dog Now? novel Chapter 156

Naomi started to explain, but Mrs. Gonzalez simply looked at Lennon with polite, formal detachment. "Thank you for bringing her. Please drive safely on your way back."

The greeting Lennon had been about to offer died on his lips.

"Of course."

With that, he got back into the car and drove away.

Naomi frowned. Once the car was gone, she turned to her mother, her voice tinged with an unfamiliar note of discontent. "Mom, why were you so cold to Lennon?"

Lennon had helped her so many times, and Naomi was deeply grateful.

She couldn't believe her own mother, an elder, would be so obvious with her dislike.

Wasn't that deliberately meant to embarrass him?

"Why were you with Lennon?"

Naomi's frown deepened. "You didn't answer my question."

Mrs. Gonzalez let out a cold laugh. "Is that any way to speak to your mother? I heard you haven't been at school much lately. So this is what you've been doing? Messing around with Lennon?"

Naomi's eyes widened, and her vision blurred with tears. "Mom!"

Mrs. Gonzalez realized that her choice of words had been too harsh, but as a parent, she couldn't bring herself to apologize. Instead, she took Naomi's hand and pulled her toward the hotel.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hughes are joining us for dinner. Don't you dare mention you came here in Lennon's car."

"Lennon is an illegitimate son. Even if the Spencers acknowledge him, his status is still a stain. If you associate with him, people will talk about you too."

Naomi held a high opinion of Lennon and hated hearing others speak of him that way. "What does that have to do with him?" she retorted. "Aren't the ones at fault the people who brought him into this world?"

"And you're perfectly polite to the other Spencers. Why would you bully a younger person who had no say in the matter?"

"What kind of nonsense are you spouting?"

Mrs. Gonzalez looked at Naomi with deep disappointment. "I thought you had a genuine falling out with Zebulon. I felt sorry for you and wanted to help. But now it's clear you don't want to marry him because you've found someone else, haven't you?"

Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were there, just as she'd expected. They stood up with warm smiles when she entered.

Seeing their cordial attitude, Naomi knew they were here to act as advocates for Zebulon.

For a fleeting moment, she was tempted to tell these parents everything—all the awful things that had happened between her and their son.

But it wasn't in her nature to cause such a scene. In the end, she just greeted the elders politely and, under her mother's direction, sat down next to Zebulon.

"Naomi."

Zebulon looked at her happily. "I ordered a lot of your favorite dishes. See if there's anything else you'd like to add."

With their parents watching, Naomi had no choice but to take the menu and pretend to look it over.

The four parents were chatting cheerfully amongst themselves.

"Look at them, their bond is as strong as ever. I say we should just set a date for the wedding sooner rather than later."
