Because she had been truly terrified, and it was only after Lennon arrived that she had started to calm down.
"Lennon..."
The name rolled off her tongue, and Naomi thought she detected a hint of intimacy in the sound.
She blushed and lowered her head, lost in thought.
A voice calling her name from the surgical ward snapped her out of her daze. She quickly pocketed the phone and rushed over. "How is Zebulon?"
"He's out of danger. Luckily, none of the glass shards hit a major artery. They've all been removed and his wounds have been treated. But he has some severe bruising and will need bed rest for a while. To prevent infection, the family needs to make sure his wounds don't get wet."
Naomi nodded, confirming she understood, and followed the nurse as they wheeled Zebulon to a private room.
Looking at Zebulon, still unconscious, Naomi's feelings were a complicated mess.
She had been growing impatient with him, but when the crash happened and he had thrown himself over her without a second thought, his face had merged with the memory of the boy from her past.
The boy she had fallen for was brave and caring, just like that.
Even though Zebulon seemed to have changed over the years, deep down, he was still that same boy at heart.
Naomi felt torn.
After all the pain she had endured, she truly didn't want to go down that road again. But he had just been injured for her sake. If she were to abandon him now, her conscience wouldn't allow it.
"Naomi!"
A group of people burst into the room. Naomi turned to see Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, along with her own parents, rushing in, drenched in sweat.
Carter and their other friends followed close behind.
"Is Zebulon okay?"
The sudden influx of people made the spacious VIP room feel cramped.
Naomi managed a faint smile. "It's okay. I can go home to change and come back later."
Carter and the others glanced back and forth between Naomi and Zebulon. Finally, Jonathan couldn't hold back anymore. "Why did you two even get into an accident? Zebulon is usually such a careful driver. How could this have happened out of the blue?"
Naomi met Jonathan's gaze.
Seeing the blame in his eyes, she knew he was looking to defend Zebulon.
Naomi had no intention of hiding anything. She explained that she was supposed to work late at the office, but Zebulon had insisted on taking her to dinner and a movie. She refused, they argued in the car, and Zebulon wasn't paying attention to the road when the accident happened.
She recounted the events without any embellishment. Before Mr. and Mrs. Hughes could say anything, Jonathan spoke up, his tone laced with disapproval. "You've been giving Zebulon the cold shoulder for a while now. He's finally trying to make things right. Naomi, you were the one who was desperate to marry him. Now that he's willing, playing hard to get isn't doing anyone any favors."
"And now you've caused an accident. Who knows what kind of trouble you'll stir up next."
"I just want a straight answer. What are your intentions with Zebulon? How are you two planning to move forward?"
