Liliana's knuckles turned white as she gripped the lipstick tube.

She forced herself to remain calm, stared straight ahead, and placed it in the center console. "Vice President Woods must have dropped this. Don't forget to give it back to her."

Her voice was steady, betraying no emotion. But she couldn't resist pointing out that she knew who it belonged to.

"Is that so?" Cedric's frown deepened. He couldn't even remember the last time Sylvia had been in his car.

The light turned green. He released the brake and pressed the accelerator, the car lurching forward. The tension from the lipstick lingered in the car, a heavy cloud that only Liliana could feel. The silence was deafening. She should have kept her mouth shut. Now she was the only one feeling awkward.

The car pulled into a Maybach dealership. The cars she had looked at online were all cheaper than the least expensive model here. She glanced at Cedric. He seemed determined to buy her a nice car. He was the one paying, so she had no choice but to go along with it.

"Any preferences?" he asked before they got out.

"Something easy for a woman to drive," she said. "And not too expensive."

Cedric got out of the car, and a salesman immediately rushed over. Perhaps her request was too vague, because Cedric simply told the salesman, "Let her choose."

The salesman hurried around the car to Liliana's side. "Welcome, miss. What kind of model are you interested in…?"

"This one is fine." It was much more understated than the others.

The salesman stopped short. After a moment, he nodded. "Okay. Whose name should the car be registered under?"

"His," she said, gesturing toward the door. "I'll have him come in to handle the paperwork."

She turned and walked out of the dealership. Cedric had just put out his cigarette when he saw her approaching. "You should pick something you like," he said. "You don't need my opinion."

"I've picked one. You can go pay. I'll wait in the car." She held out her hand, palm up. "Give me the car keys."
