The room was dim, the curtains drawn tightly.
A long figure was outlined under the covers, and she could faintly hear the man's steady breathing.
Liliana stood at the foot of the bed, just able to make out the man's vague silhouette.
His eyes were closed and his thin lips were set in a firm line, exuding an air of authority even in sleep.
On the rare occasions he worked from home, he would take a nap in the afternoon.
She used to get so excited, lying beside him, unable to sleep, just watching him.
For two years, Cedric had only come home at night, eaten dinner, and gone to bed.
They spent less than ten hours together each day, and six or seven of those were spent sleeping.
During the rest of the time… she never had a chance to really look at him, to just be with him peacefully.
Sometimes at night, no matter how tired she was, she couldn't bear to fall asleep, wanting to gaze at him for just a little longer.
In this marriage, this relationship, she had been the subservient one from the very beginning.
It wasn't about feeling wronged; seeing clearly that he didn't love her, she could only blame herself for not being clear-headed enough.
She had dived headfirst into this love, trapping herself in the turmoil he created, unable to break free.
Her emotions rose and fell, slowly settling from a chaotic complexity into a state of calm.
Just a little longer, she told herself. As soon as Hale Preston got better, she could leave.
Since she had to endure it either way, there was no point in deliberately making Cedric unhappy.
After all, when Cedric was unhappy, she was the one who suffered.
She turned and went downstairs to prepare dinner.
Since they hadn't eaten lunch, she made a lavish dinner.
It was all because Cedric hadn't stepped in. And the reason Cedric hadn't helped was that Liliana hadn't done her job properly.
She couldn't get pregnant, and she couldn't even coax her own husband.
So he could only pressure Vida, and Vida would call Liliana, repeatedly guilt-tripping her.
Liliana was sick and tired of hearing it.
"Growing up, you raised me on a shoestring budget. I started working part-time in college. After marrying Cedric, the profits he brought to the Preston Family are enough to support me for several lifetimes. Did you really raise me for nothing? Is money the only way you measure our relationship? Don't you care about family at all?"
Vida was at a loss for words and looked over at Chuck, whose face was dark.
Furious, Chuck snatched the phone. "If you really cared about family, would Hale be in this situation today? The Preston family wouldn't be in this state! And don't you dare bring up your college days. If you had listened to me back then and studied finance, you wouldn't be looked down on after marrying Cedric. Being his secretary would have been better than being a housewife! Insisting on doing that useless design work, what's the point…"
When Liliana was in college, the Preston Family was only on a decline, not yet completely destitute.
Even back then, Chuck had wanted to groom her for the position of Mrs. Forrest.
