The next day, Nicole climbed into Jasper's car, dark circles heavy under her eyes.
"Jasper, did you get it? The test?" she asked immediately.
"I did."
"Did anyone see you?"
Jasper gave her a doting smile. "I kept it on the down-low. Nobody saw."
Nicole let out a breath of relief, patting her chest. "Thank God."
"You didn't sleep well last night, did you?"
"How could I? I was up all night thinking."
"Hey," he said gently, "stop frowning."
Nicole nodded, though her heart was still racing as they arrived at the house Jasper had prepared for their future together.
"Give it to me, quick," she said as soon as they were inside.
"Here."
Nicole started tearing at the packaging. "How does this even work? Let me see the instructions."
"Nicole, want to make a bet?" Jasper asked suddenly.
"About what?"
"If there's a baby, I win. And if I win, I get to make one request. Deal?"
Nicole looked up at him. "You're awfully confident."
He simply arched an eyebrow, a slight, knowing smirk playing on his lips.
"It's not going to happen," Nicole insisted. "I've just been stressed lately. It messes with your cycle."
"Then take the bet."
"And if I win?"
"Then I'll do anything you want," Jasper promised. "No questions asked."
Nicole thought about it for a second and nodded. "Fine. We'll see soon enough."
Jasper leaned against the bathroom door, arms crossed, trying to look casual. Inside, his heart was pounding.
Star, please be there.
He prayed silently, closing his eyes as his breath hitched.
Suddenly, a cry came from inside. "Ah!"
"Nicole? What happened?"
The door swung open slowly. Nicole stood there, looking completely lost. "What am I going to do? Jasper... It's real. There's a baby."
Jasper took her face in his hands and kissed her forehead. "Nicole, our little Princess Star is finally here. Aren't you happy?"
"How are you so sure it's a girl?"
"Just a hunch." He picked her up carefully, cradling her in his arms. "I know what you're worried about. Don't be scared—I'll handle everything."
Nicole looked at him firmly. "Jasper, do you have your ID on you?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Let's go. We're going to family court."
Jasper blinked, taken aback. "What?"
"What, you don't want to take responsibility?"
He shook his head quickly. "Nothing would make me happier."
