Chapter 3

The entire day, I was completely out of it.

I didn’t even reply to Noctis’s messages on time.

After forcing myself to finish revising the security proposal while holding all my emotions down, I dragged myself home in a daze.

The moment I unlocked my phone, countless messages from Noctis popped up.

[Baby, what’re you doing?]

[Baby, why are you ignoring me?]

[Baby, why are you acting weird today? Did I do something wrong?]

My fingers trembled as I slowly typed:

[N, are you hiding something from me?]

Noctis replied instantly.

[Nope. Baby, whenever you ask me something, I always answer honestly.]

[Did you misunderstand something about me?]

[No.]

I stared at the screen, trying desperately to calm my chaotic thoughts.

Now that I was almost certain Noctis was Finn, the next thing I needed to figure out was whether Finn had actually cheated on me.

And more importantly…

Who exactly was the “babe” he’d been talking to? What if I’d misunderstood everything?

Just then, another message from Noctis appeared.

[Oh right, baby. TOM FORD’s newest collection dropped. Help me pick which outfit looks better? I’m wearing it tomorrow.]

I deliberately chose a black sweater with the logo stitched on the left chest.

Easy to recognize.

Deep down, I was still clinging to one last bit of hope.

If Finn didn’t wear it tomorrow, then maybe he wasn’t Noctis after all.

And maybe I wouldn’t have to struggle over whether my online boyfriend had cheated on me.

The next day, I walked into Finn’s Alpha office with the finalized proposal in hand.

Finn was sitting on the sofa drinking coffee.

And he was wearing the exact black TOM FORD sweater I picked out yesterday.

The black color felt painfully glaring.

“Alpha Finn, the proposal’s finished.”

Finn smiled at me warmly.

“Thanks for your hard work, Cora.”

“This afternoon, the Alpha King will be visiting our pack. Get yourself prepared.”

“Understood.”

I glanced at his sweater and asked casually, pretending not to care.

“Alpha Finn, I’ve never seen you wear that sweater before. Looks good on you.”

Finn smiled faintly.

“Bought it yesterday.”

My heart instantly sank.

That only made me more certain that Finn was my online boyfriend.

After leaving the Alpha office, I lingered nearby absentmindedly, my eyes fixed on the office door.

Finn had said yesterday that his “babe” would be coming today.

I really wanted to know who she was.

Because if things were exactly what I thought they were…

Then this relationship needed to end immediately.

A few minutes later, Finn walked out while holding Arwen’s hand, watching her leave with absolutely no sign of sadness on his face.

At that moment, I felt more ridiculous than ever.

Like a complete clown.

Thinking back on everything between us made my chest ache bitterly.

The only thing worth being thankful for was that I’d used a fake account during our online relationship.

Otherwise, this would’ve been ten times more humiliating.

I forced myself to accept reality.

If love was gone, then so be it. If my ideal mate never existed, then I’d focus on work instead.

After all, I was a rational she-wolf.

There was no way I’d throw away my Gamma position and leave the pack over a man.

That afternoon, Alpha Finn sent me another message.

[Gamma Cora, the Alpha King reviewed your proposal and thinks it’s workable. Come inside and explain it in detail so his Beta can prepare the security arrangements.]

I took a deep breath, gathered myself, and walked into the office with my head held high.

“Cora, this is our Alpha King and also one of my closest friends, Hayden. Relax and explain your ideas to King Hayden.”

I ignored Finn completely and looked toward the man sitting on the sofa.

At the exact same moment, his gaze lifted and met mine.

Unlike Finn’s cocky arrogance, the man before me carried an untouchable kind of nobility.

Cold.

Reserved.

The kind of man who made people instinctively stay away.
