You Faked Your Deaths to Punish Me?! That’s Illegal, Family! novel Chapter 82

Chapter 9

And there it was-a recording. His last words.

“Babe, I’m going first. Protecting you and our daughter… that’s the greatest honor of my life.”

His voice never broke.

Even staring down death, he sounded steady. Strong.

That day, I cried until I couldn’t breathe.

My husband wasn’t a coward running from the law.

He was my hero. My daughter’s hero.

And when Jake Miller’s father finally got nailed for fraud, the police re-opened the case.

My husband’s name was cleared at last.

But it was too late.

The Millers had taken everything from me. My husband. My daughter. My family.

So I sent them all to hell.

And Jake Miller’s mother?

She never would’ve chosen death on her own-not so quickly, not so willingly..

Emily and I paid her a visit.

Every insult Jake Miller had once hurled at my daughter-I spat back at his mother.

Word for word.

By the time I walked out of that police station, the detective only gave me one thing.

A pat on the shoulder.

“Life still has to go on,” he said softly.

I curled my lips into a smile that didn’t reach my eyes.

“Sure. Of course.”

But I knew better.

It would never be “okay” again.

Emily’s life slowly found its way back on track.

She came to see me, to thank me.

Because of me, she could finally walk through her campus like a normal girl, without the weight of her past crushing her.

After she left, I went back to my bedroom.

Opened the drawer. Took out a family photo.

My husband and daughter, smiling so bright, like the world could never hurt them.

I reached for the bottle of pills.

The sunlight was warm, streaming in through the curtains.

I laid down on the bed, clutching the picture tight.

And as the haze closed in, I saw them.

Waving at me.

I smiled.

“I’m coming.”

This time, nothing could tear us apart again.
