Shawn’s original mission was simple: create a new identity in Anteca. And when the time came, he was to infiltrate the Pierson Corporation.
His initial target was Dean Pierson’s department. Close to Zoren Pierson, but far enough not to get his attention.
Until then, Shawn was instructed to live independently and support himself. This way, even if someone checked, they wouldn’t track any anomaly. At least, not on the first try. That’s why he worked a normal job in the big city, always sticking to the same cover story about having a family in the province—a complete lie.
And just like that, he lived in Anteca without raising any suspicion.
But then, the plan changed.
Instead of applying to the Pierson Corporation, Shawn was ordered to infiltrate the Prime Group. And just like when he was told to move to Anteca and start fresh, he followed the order without question.
And then... he saw her.
Penelope Bennet.
She was leaning against the wall in that interview room. Her presence wasn’t loud, but it was impossible to ignore. It didn’t seem like she wanted to be there—more like she was forced into it.
She didn’t say a word, but something about her made Shawn’s gut twist. He had been in Anteca long enough to trust his instincts, and his gut told him to fail this.
He didn’t know why at the time... but he tried to fail.
Unfortunately, Patricia Miller had other plans. She dragged him right back into the spotlight, bragging about things she absolutely shouldn’t have.
Shawn hadn’t even planned to show up for the final interview. But Patricia was persistent. Then came a call from his group, pressing him for results.
So, in the end... he showed up.
And then, the unexpected happened.
On the day of the final interview—when Shawn was actively thinking of how to fail it—Patricia got arrested. And Shawn got dragged in with her.
His plan to sabotage the Prime Group interview and negotiate a switch back to the Pierson Corporation? All of it went down the drain.
Ten years in Anteca, and he ended up in jail.
From there, things spiraled out of his control.
Penny saved him and Patricia. She didn’t sugarcoat her actions or try to soften her image. Maybe it was the way she recruited them that kept him coming back the next day... or maybe it was Patricia’s nonstop messages. Or maybe... maybe it was because he told Brad he got in, and he didn’t have a choice anymore.
So he stayed.
Shawn showed up on the first day.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Until, without even noticing... he just kept showing up.
At first, it was because he had to. Then... it was because he wanted to.
For a while, Shawn didn’t feel so alone anymore.
Teddy was aloof and cold, but he looked after them in his own quiet way. Hayley was competent and never let anyone forget it, but somehow still leaned on him when it mattered.
Then there was Patricia—annoying, loud, but always bringing food to share, always cheering him on in her own way... even though she had no idea he was lying to all of them.
And then, there was their boss.
Penny.
A woman smaller than him, yet somehow... always the biggest presence in the room. Chin up, back straight—a fearless leader who stood at the front to protect her people, not behind them barking orders.
No, she wasn’t the coddling type. But she was the type to hand Teddy ammo and tell him to go beat his bullies senseless.
(Shawn knew that because of the wiretap he’d secretly installed in her office.)
She was the type to scold Patricia for being careless, then tell her to reheat the buns properly next time. The one who told Hayley, "It’s not always a competition."
