Evelyn quite liked Jean. If she had to choose between Nadine and Jean as her daughter-in-law, she would definitely choose Jean.
Jean was very good with her words, had high emotional intelligence, and always knew exactly how to make someone feel good about themselves. Moreover, she was generous. Whenever Brad gave her expensive jewelry, she would give it to Evelyn instead.
Nadine, on the other hand, was just a workaholic. She didn't know how to say anything remotely pleasant and was as stiff as a board. Why would Evelyn want a daughter-in-law like that? To upset her every day?
That said, Jean had messed up this time. Evelyn gave Jean such a good opportunity, yet she just had to blow it. If she had just spent the night with Brad, the title of the lady of the Hamilton household would be hers for the taking.
Unfortunately, Jean turned out to be a huge letdown. It was so infuriating that she wanted to pull all her hair out. Hence, she was rude to Jean when she called to ask for information.
Jean sensed her displeasure and hastily explained, "Please don't be mad at me, Mrs. Hamilton. I'm grateful for the opportunity you gave me the other day, and I know you've done so much for me. I'm truly grateful and would love nothing more than to be your daughter-in-law.
"However, Brad had a heart attack and was out cold that night. I couldn't even move him, so I failed. At that point, all I could think about was his health, and I couldn't bring myself to do anything more. Please forgive me.
"After all, Brad is your son. I'm sure you want him to be healthy too, right?" Jean deliberately paused, listening carefully for Evelyn's reaction.
After confirming that Evelyn was still on the line, she continued, "Mrs. Hamilton, I've felt so ashamed and guilty since I failed the last time that I couldn't bring myself to contact you. I know I've let you down, and I've been wrestling with it ever since. But I decided that even if you were upset with me, I still had to make this call.
