The others kept shooting him looks that practically screamed, "Are you seriously buying your own story?"

Officer Baldwin finally gave up and plopped down into his seat with a sigh.

Then, out of nowhere, the quiet and unassuming records keeper, who'd been sitting silently in the corner, dropped a bombshell: "I’m with Officer Baldwin on this. I really think No. 13 is genuinely trying to help."

All eyes snapped to him. Unlike Officer Baldwin’s gut feeling, this guy came armed with facts. "You’ve all missed something crucial: No. 13’s past. He was kidnapped as a kid. I reckon that because he’s been through such hell, he’s motivated to help us save kids in similar situations."

The room went quiet as everyone exchanged glances, their fierce debates about No. 13’s character suddenly morphing into nods of understanding.

"Turns out, No. 13 isn’t the cold-hearted villain we pegged him for. Getting him on our side is a must."

"If he’s got a soft spot for kidnapped kids, maybe there’s more to his past actions than meets the eye," Officer Baldwin mused, his view on No. 13 doing a complete 180.

In the end, they took a vote, and the majority agreed to let No. 13 lend a hand in the investigation.

When the gifts were sent back yet again, Nathalie was completely stumped.

Lizzy pouted, muttering, "Sure, I get it if he snubs everyday stuff, being the rich heir and all. But these limited edition gifts? Why reject those?"

Nathalie stared at the pile of gifts, lost in thought.

"What a peculiar guy," Lizzy chimed in.

Nathalie looked over the fancy gifts once more. "Even these lavish gifts didn’t win him over. What does he really like?"

Lizzy's eyes widened. "Sis, you’re not seriously thinking of sending more gifts, are you?"

Nathalie replied, "I need his help, so I’ve got to keep at it until I win him over."
