Guilt gnawed at him.
He was still Greta's husband in the eyes of the law, yet he'd just stood by, watching her struggle without lifting a finger. It felt downright cold and heartless.
After wolfing down his meal, he gave Nina a quick pat on the head and said, "Nina, your private tutor will be here soon. Make sure you study well, okay? I'll check your homework when I get back."
"Okay, Daddy. Come home early, okay?" Nina chirped.
"I will," he promised, heading out the door.
Cameron rushed to the hospital, straight to Greta's room. When she saw him, her face was calm, almost indifferent.
"You're here?"
Cameron rubbed his nose awkwardly, trying to mask the guilt bubbling inside. "Sorry for neglecting you these past few days."
In the past, Greta would've thrown a fit, demanding gifts and apologies until she felt appeased. But this time, she was unusually gentle and understanding, simply saying, "It's okay." Those two words glossed over all her pent-up bitterness and resentment.
Her calmness only made Cameron more uneasy. "Are you mad?"
"No."
"In the past, if I didn't cater to you, you'd have a meltdown."
