* was preparing a late–night snack for Ms. Sadler. But when I went to her room to call her, she wasn’t there. I was just about to look for her when you returned,” replied Ms. Sadler.
Anderson’s cold, piercing gaze shifted away from Hailey. “Don’t let her die.”
Julia nodded quickly. “Yes, Mr. Barlow.”
Anderson was about to leave to find Mayra, who hadn’t returned yet. As he stepped out, he saw Mayra standing at the bedroom door with her face smudged with dirt. Caught off guard, Mayra fumbled with the door handle. “A–Andy…”
Anderson’s gaze narrowed with displeasure. “Where have you been?”
“I was collecting cardboard boxes. Andy, why are you up so late? I’m exhausted. I’m going to bed now,” she mumbled. She quickly changed the subject and slipped into her room before he could respond.
Inside, she started undressing, but halfway through, she heard the door open.
Quickly pulling her clothes back on, she turned to see Anderson walking in without knocking.
“Andy, do you need something?” she asked.
Anderson reached out to wipe the dirt from her face, but she stepped back quickly.” Andy, it’s late. You should rest.”
Just then, the sound of running water from the adjacent room reached them. Mayra imagined Hailey, naked in his bathroom…
The sound was unmistakable in the quiet house. Anderson lowered his hand but persisted. “Mayra, did you see everything downstairs? And did you step back because you’re disgusted with me?”
Anderson’s penetrating intuition left no room for hiding. Mayra avoided his gaze, and her voice was weak. “No, I didn’t.” She was indeed hiding from him out of fear.

“Mr. Barlow, something’s not right,” said Julia after walking over.
Hailey’s body had turned red, and she was babbling incoherently.
Mayra, with her hands clenched, said, “Andy, don’t worry about me. Go check on her.”
After finishing her words, Mayra entered the walk–in closet and pulled out her usual sleepwear. When she heard the door close, she knew Anderson had left.
Mayra took her time getting into the shower and then let the water wash over her.
