Chapter 43 Stay Away From Eric
At this point, Jeremiah asking to meet me probably had little to do with the divorce itself, but if there was even the slightest chance of progress, I had to
After all, things were already completely broken between us. There was no point in dragging it out any further.
Ichanged into something casual and headed out at a leisurely pace.
When I arrived at the restaurant, I found that Jeremiah had already ordered the food, and every dish was my favorite. The table was filled with an array of visually stunning and aromatic dishes, but I felt no appetite at all. Dropping my bag on the table, I got straight to the point. “Did you bring the divorce papers?”
“What’s the rush?”
Jeremiah poured me a glass of red wine and spoke in a tone that almost sounded nostalgic. “It’s been a while since we’ve sat down and had a proper meal together.”
I stared at the fake smile plastered across his face and couldn’t resist mocking him. “Not eating together suits me just fine. After all, how can I stomach a meal with someone whose face is enough to ruin my appetite?
His expression froze, and his hand tightened around the wine glass.
He managed to suppress his temper a few seconds later and replied calmly, “I know I wronged you, so I’m here today to apologize.”
He raised his glass and lightly clinked it against mine. “I was in the wrong for how I handled things. From now on, let’s talk things through instead of letting misunderstandings build, okay?
I stared at the swirling red liquid in my glass, feeling a wave of irony wash over me. When I had loved him wholeheartedly, all I got in return was neglect and hurt. Now that I was over him and ready to leave, he suddenly wanted to humble himself
But I wasn’t stupid. His humility had nothing to do with me as a person–it was entirely about protecting the Cornell family’s interests.
He didn’t seem too concerned about whether I forgave him or not. Knowing his personality, he probably thought that simply apologizing was already a huge concession on his part.
As he picked up his fork and continued as if everything was fine, he suddenly added, “By the way, tell Eric to back off from targeting the Cornell family. Otherwise, I won’t hesitate to go head–to–head with him.”
