Alicia froze for a moment. So, in Nola’s eyes, the two of them were just students Vincent happened to sponsor.
“You’re probably right…” Alicia couldn’t be bothered to explain.
Nola had no idea how, back then, Alicia had agreed to all sorts of unreasonable requests from Vincent just to get his support for her tuition.
“That’s why, sis, what we should focus on is becoming the most valuable person to Vincent.” Nola’s confidence had a sharp edge; she was clearly provoking Alicia, implying she would outshine her. “Grades aren’t everything, you know.”
So what if Alicia had better test scores? Nola wasn’t exactly failing.
“Good luck with that. I don’t need to measure my worth by how useful I am to someone else. I just need to answer to myself.” Alicia paused, then added, “By the way, I’m married now.”
There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. “You’re married?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s your husband like, then? I bet he’s nothing compared to Vincent, right? Did you settle for second best because you couldn’t have Vincent? Sis, giving up like that really doesn’t suit you.” Nola laughed, a mocking edge to her voice, as if Alicia were just a coward.
“I’m busy. Work hard, okay?” Alicia cut her off and ended the call.
Tyrone snapped apart a pair of disposable forks, rubbing away the splinters before handing one to her.
Alicia put her phone aside and managed a polite smile. “Thanks…”
Tyrone didn’t reply. There was always a certain distance between them, and it never felt good.
After they finished their burgers, Tyrone drove Alicia home.
Her mood was anything but cheerful. She didn’t really care about being angry with Vincent or Nola, but her mind was in chaos—filled with thoughts of Tyrone and Serena.
Alicia knew all too well how deep a man’s attachment to his first love could run.
She’d dated Vincent for four years, always aware there was someone else—Mina—lodged in his heart, but she’d never truly envied Mina.
