Tyrone kept things vague, only saying that his mother and Nicole’s mother had always been close friends.
Alicia nodded, half-understanding.
Since Tyrone clearly didn’t want to reveal the real reason, Alicia didn’t press him for more.
After all… using his mother’s last wish as an excuse to uphold an engagement—that just seemed a little far-fetched.
…
Tyrone put work aside to stay with Alicia constantly.
Nicole, on the other hand, was getting anxious. She was terrified that if Alicia went for a checkup, the pregnancy would be discovered. She tried every possible way to get rid of the baby Alicia was carrying, but she never even got the chance.
Tyrone didn’t let Alicia out of his sight.
“It’s strange. I haven’t heard back from Melanie in days,” Alicia mused, sitting on the couch and staring at her phone.
Except for that one time Melanie ditched her to go shopping with her grandfather, Alicia couldn’t think of anything she’d done to upset her.
“She’s just got a childish streak. Gets her feelings hurt over nothing. Ignore her,” Tyrone said, bringing Alicia a plate of freshly sliced fruit and settling in beside her.
“No, I’m worried. I’m going to call her,” Alicia said, unable to shake her unease. She dialed Melanie’s number.
But Melanie hung up the call immediately.
“Will you try?” Alicia looked at Tyrone, pleading.
Tyrone nodded and called Melanie himself. She hung up on him, too.
Alicia’s anxiety grew. “Do you think something’s happened? Should we go to her school to check on her?”
She remembered hearing a rumor that Melanie was dating someone at school.
